So we have a bet going. Who wants to sign up and find out? I nominate Cass. Can I be a BOT? I hear they're very influential of course! Get yourself a generic screen name, a random profile pic, and just retweet everything you see that might piss off people of a particular political persuasion.

But.. do we Americans even have the mental capacity to create and employ bots without ourselves being corrupted by said bots? I'm kinda scared to even try. I've seen the reports of American brains being controlled by bots.

Millions of Americans have been retweeting, following, and interacting with Russian bots on Twitter. There are a ton of people crying about losing "friends" they've been following or were following them. See this hashtag #TwitterLockOut
They went to events organized online by Russian operatives, and retweeted and amplified by thousands of bots. And they still can't accept it. They weren't suspicious about thousands of accounts that existed only to retweet political messages, and that all were retweeting the same thing.
So yes, I share your doubts about the intellectual capacity of many Americans.

Apparently bots were quite active on Jill Stein's behalf as well ( she's totes crazy, btw), and on Bernie's. That wasn't quite as successful. Probably just successful enough, though. I had some liberal-aimed bots try to follow me. I blocked literally hundreds of them. I thought they were fairly obvious -- they do nothing but retweet canned messages and I have no time for that -- but I see that a lot of people do follow them back and freaking reply to them and retweet them. It is enough for them that "hey, this person is saying stuff I agree with! Right on! We have a movement!" Yeah, not me. I think it's creepy. I didn't lose any followers in the Twitter bot purge. When I see what I think is a real person interacting with a bot, I try to give them a heads up, but they rarely listen. People be dumb.

You'll be snatched up on a Trump dating site! *preens* I mean, who WOULDN'T want to listen to me listing everything I hate about their hero day in and day out without respite? And I'm a good cook!

Oh I hear ya Cass. It's really rather quit chilling. Thank the powers that be the evil is being brought to heal.
Could you imagine if our own major political parties learned to do such a thing? Where would our weak Americans minds be then?
The positive thing though, if there is a positive thing, the Russian bots have showed our political class how to influence elections for a lot less money than what was spent in our last presidential election.

At least if a post is coming from a clearly partisan source, people can evaluate it as such. And if people learn the DNC or RNC used fake accounts to amplify their meassage, they'll look corrupt and likely pay a price for that.
The most dangerous accounts are those that seem to represent actual people or organizations of people -- like a spontaneous grass roots swell of support.
They not only get people with similar views riled up, but also people with opposing views. E.g., a ton of them right now are posing as Trump supporters and saying nasty stuff about the Parkland shooting survivors. Of course that gets a lot of us angry -- and many people's anger not only goes to those bots, but to Trump supporters. (If you don't realize how many are bots, you get the impression that tons of real live Trump supporters are sneering at those kids.)
I missed the social media insanity during the actual election. I quit facebook years ago, and only got active on Twitter in 2018 (I joined in 2009, but said, "meh," and never used it). I'm just seeing the POST election kooky. And yeah, it is quite kooky enough.

I'm just glad we didn't have these evil bots during the Arab spring or the Ukrainian maiden episodes. That would have been a disaster.

There has always been propaganda. It is a matter of how efficiently and effectively it spreads.
Now it can easily spread to millions in a short period of time and the source easily disguised. It's scary.

And maybe, when you're in a romantic mood, you can make your hair up orange like Trump to turn 'em on.

What if it turned out that this whole time, everyone Cass was interacting with at The Colline Gate was a Russian bot?

Well, Rob can't be a bot. Bots would never post Tawny Kitaen videos. Would they? And Vince -- Vince is always talking about bacon. Bots don't eat bacon. And Angie's just too mean to be a bot. And...and... None of you are bots, no way. Are you?
