Also, I believe it was a rainy day.
It surely is not her jacket - much too inexpensive.
Maybe this is part of a master plan to exhaust everyone's capacity for moral outrage by the end of October. We'll all be sitting on our couches on election day, drooling into our laps.

I don't really know what the First Lady's intellectual bona-fides are, but my personal theory is that she's just... not very smart. She seems to be kind of the stereotypical beautiful trophy wife who's never had to do much more than look pretty. So, as hard as it is to believe that no one looked at that jacket and thought "That is going to stir some shit," I can actually believe that Melania thought it looked stylish and a little edgy and gave not a thought to the optics.
As for what everyone else on her team thought (because someone did have to see it and give a thought to how it was going to look) - I don't think this was a "dog whistle to the alt-right," per se, but I can certainly imagine, given the calibre of Trump's team, that they basically thought "Oboy, the librulz and the Fake Media are gonna go apeshit over this! Gigglegiggle snort snort!" If I attributed any capacity for calculation at all on their part, it would be that they figured all the liberals being mean to the First Lady (along with such an "edgy" message) would buy them a little more cred with their base after Trump backpedaled.

We'll all be sitting on our couches on election day, drooling into our laps. Or to keep us howling about the obviously batshit and deeply wrong so we can't possibly keep up with the corruption, scandal, snuggling up to grifters, disastrous tariffs, health benefit slashes, etc. Seriously, taking aside the message ,the jacket is not chic or at all her style. It is the kind of thing a rebellious middle-class teen might wear.

Yep, I've often wondered if some of the more bizarre stuff is just diversion.

I dunno. It's hard to see anything past all the smoke from the raging dumpster fire.

Makes you miss Cofefe, don't it?
I voted clueless, and to be honest, I'm sticking with that even after Trumps tweet. He's not going to admit that nobody in their entire staff pointed out to her that it wasn't the best wardrobe choice, so he's tweet, as usual, is his ego talking.
Beyond that, why didn't anyone on her staff say, "Maybe try a different jacket."

Possibly she herself is that clueless. Who knows. But not everyone on her staff and the White House. No, I'm sorry, someone here intended a message.
The best I can come up with for her is that she's a paperdoll, a puppet, to be dressed at Trump's whim and trotted out when he needs cover or a distraction. And I won't respect her for that.
By the way, they say Mike Cohen has flipped and is cooperating with prosecutors. It's possible that's another reason Trump needed a distraction today.

But to be fair, we must never forget: Obama once wore a tan suit.

Just saying...after all the brouhaha, she wore the jacket a second time for the return trip. I'm with this guy...

She wore it to the plane at Andrews, from the car to the stairs (and the same on the way back). She didn't wear it to the detention center. Foolish choice, given the reality of the professional media and social media? Sure. Dog whistle? Please. 'Course Trump--being Trump--is happy to jump in with both feet. And the spread of this story on social media indicates--to me--just how far into lunacy so many people--who were probably once reasonable--have gone. Sorry, Rob, I was so busy thanking Mikey on the last page I completely missed your post. Oh, yes, I agree. This was perfectly normal first lady attire, particularly for an event like this. Amazing the media made such a big deal. How could Melania ever have anticipated that would happen ? Why on Earth would anyone think that a woman who normally wears $50,000 designer jackets suddenly choosing to wear a $39 jacket emblazoned with "I really don't care, do u?" when she visits the children her husband ripped from their parents, possibly forever, might possibly really not care? So unreasonable to read the message "I really don't care" into an article of clothing printed with the words "I really don't care." The media and the left has just gone batshit. Obviously, this was a completely reasonable sartorial choice that anyone with an enormous wardrobe might have made. I think we are all forgetting that Michelle Obama once wore a sleeveless dress. Both sides.
