I am wondering what kind of records were set this weekend, what with the premier of Endgame and the third episode of GoT. I know there were a ton of people--like me--who actually squeezed both events into their weekend or even their Sunday.
Endgame is setting records at the box office and I have to imagine that this episode of GoT is going to be huge for HBO, numbers wise.
But there's also the non-stop talk about both on social media, as well as the countless articles about both on regular media, detailing what happened, what this means, what that means, who died, who might have died, and what will come next.
It is, I think, a weird time to be alive.
And hats off to those of you who watch neither series--Marvel movies or GoT--because I don't know how you can do it...

When I came into work this morning, nobody asked me about the NBA or NHL playoffs. Nobody asked me about the shooting at the Jewish synagogue. Nobody asked me about the bald-faced lie Trump told about infanticide. Nobody asked me about anything except did I watch Game of Thrones and/or Avengers: Endgame.
No, to the former and yes, to the latter. The original plan was to wait on Endgame until today or sometime during the week. However, it soon became apparent to me that this wasn't going to work. There are two things the Internet does exceptionally well. Hate on things and spoil things. Every schmoe and his brother has a think piece, a review, an essay, a video, a podcast, and a soapbox in the park where they can shout to the world who lives, who dies and how everything in Endgame unfolds.
I called my son and he secured tickets for a 10:40 am showing of the film. I really, really liked it a lot and now it's safe to go back online because you can't spoil what has already been seen.
As far as GoT goes, I never got into it. No disrespect, but it's simply not my thing. On Sundays, I'm watching Killing Eve and there's no room for dragons, swordplay and incest. Guess I'll wait for the box set.

I’m forbidden from seeing the Avengers movie until daughter #2 comes home from college after mother’s day. I go on Facebook and Twitter with much trepidation.

I didn't start Game of Thrones until this year. Figured, eh, I'd take the free week's trial of HBONow, watch a couple of episodes just to see what the hype was about. I ended up getting a subscription and binging the hell out of the first 7 seasons so I could watch season 8 with the rest of the world.
I haven't watched the Avengers. Maybe eventually -- GoT sucked up most of my screen time!
The other thing I very very highly recommend, by the way, is the Netflix series The Last Kingdom. I might actually like it better than GoT, and it's only three seasons in. No dragons and far less magic-y stuff than Game of Thrones (there's a bit, but IMO sometimes it's questionable whether it's even magic at all rather than just the characters' belief in magic), but a bit of actual history and lots of kickass fighting and acting. Like GoT, prepare to lose characters you love in horrible ways. Catch up before season 4 starts! (And yes, I am actively trying to push people to watch it. I want to make sure there's a season 5 and beyond!)

My wife is rather annoyed with me as I tend to bing watch shows at night and I'm watching The Originals in netflix right now. She hates that she has to fall asleep to people being killed over and over again. I keep telling her, some of the victims walk it off. I offered to start Black Summer, but zombies aren't better than vampires in her opinion.

We Were Eight Years in Power by Ta-Neshi Coates. It's a book gathering the best of his essays in The Atlantic. Now I love this Coates' work and he's been on my radar since his days as a beginner at The Village Voice. Yet here we are with April about to turn into May and I'm not done with yet. Let alone read another book or three by now. Netflix, Hulu, Amazon and all the others soon to be joined by Disney+ have weasled their way into my life and they're been very hard to exterminate. Binging Better Call Saul, Killing Eve, Luke Cage and Big Mouth requires less commitment than opening a book, sitting down, turning on a light and actually reading. I'm going to take a hiatus from both streaming services and social media in the not-too distant future. At least long enough to finish the damn book. I checked the first episode of Black Summer and thought it didn't suck. It just drops us into the Zombie Apocalypse and asks you to hang on. Oh, and you might wanna work on your cardio because we're talking 28 Days Later/Dawn of the Dead remake fast zombies.

Are you suffering from as much Binging as I am? Oh, I am. As a rule, I'm not a binger, but this last several months -- yeah, I have a binging problem! I've managed to get some non-work reading in this year, but the vast majority of my reading has been political. Between all of the books that have come out over this last year, the Mueller report, the news cycle, etc., I've had precious little time for my beloved fiction. Normally I have a pretty balanced diet of fiction and non-fiction, and indeed leaning more heavily on fiction, but I guess it's this particular political climate -- it just has felt so important to stay abreast, to hear what important people are saying and thinking, to try to understand how we got to this terrible place, and so forth. And when I've needed a break from all that, I've found (and this is not normal for me) that binging Game of Thrones and the like was often a more thorough escape than reading. I'm not sure if that's because of some very exceptional shows, or of the nature of our political times and their effect on me! One recent book I HAVE read, by the way, and can recommend, is our own markesq 's latest.
