Trump & family's trips have cost us in a month almost as much as Obama's did in a year. As reported by Forbes:
So much for eliminating the country's debt - it'll just be shifted to Trump's travel expenses.

Then of course there's the cost of providing security for his family in New York City. All in all, he's costing taxpayers a buttload more than any previous president.

Maybe when he visits Moscow, he can just crash with Putin instead of going to an expensive hotel. That should cut costs a bit.

So people are surprised that Trump's acting like a potentate? He's obviously engaging in more of that government transparency, exposing his naked greed and lack of respect for taxpayers for all to see.
That said, Trump's massive additional travel costs won't even be a rounding error in the financial damage his protectionist policies are going to do to the whole US economy. What really appalls me is that a ruler spending a million dollars a month for travel expenses is now considered reasonable.

I stand corrected. In my defense, my little girly brain can't handle all the business knowledge TheDonald's bigly brain can.

In fairness, getting rid of the school lunches for poor kids ought to cover a fraction of those costs.

I don't like the word "just" being in there. Averaging $12.1 million a year seems like a lot, to me. There was nothing modest about Obama in this regard. And Obama caught a lot of flak for his traveling expenses, as I recall.
That said, I don't trust all of these numbers, how they are being computed. I really don't. More importantly, I don't really care all that much, as long as the President is doing his or her job. There's going to be travel. There's going to be a need for security and staff when there is travel.
And that said, anyone who bitched about Obama's numbers better be bitching about Trump's, because I think it obvious that he's travelling more frequently than Obama or anyone other past President.
And that said, costs for security involving his family in New York or anywhere else is what it is. Trump isn't the cause of those expenses. His family needs security because the world is full of assholes. Blame the assholes for that.

If Trump has to travel, he has to travel. I agree with Robo, that as long as he's doing his job, we realize there are going to be travel expenses. What I don't understand is why he has to travel to Mar-a- Lago for some of these things. Can't he do the same things in the White House? Is he substituting Mar-a-Lago for Camp David? Is it much more expensive to use Mar-A-Lago which was not set up for the POTUS like Camp David is? I think a bit more analysis of the costs compared with the costs of doing things the usual POTUS way would be helpful.

I do agree we have an obligation to protect our president and his family, and it is never cheap.
But Trump's lifestyle choices have added tremendously to those expenses. I think past presidents have recognized that with the power and perks of the presidency come some lifestyle sacrifices. No one is asking him to live on lentils and take the bus, but come on -- every weekend playing golf in Florida? Really? And why not Camp David? Isn't that why it's there?
And I disagree that he isn't responsible for the costs in New York -- past presidents brought their families to the White House, where they could efficiently and effectively be protected along with the president. Given how many kids move in the middle of a school year, I have little patience for the "oh, but moving during a school year!" angst. Plus the kid can't be having anything like a good time here right now -- he must be a virtual prisoner in his apartment when he's not in class. I honestly think he'd be better off at the White House.
And yeah -- if you bitched about Obama's travel and Obama's golf, Trump is far outstripping him.

...and if Trump's family is going to stay in NYC, the entire country should be footing the bill for the colossal security costs, not just the taxpayers of NYC.
That is not the way it is going down now.
No matter what, we are having to deal with the traffic snarls, the draining of police resources, and the increased terrorist risk. The fact that we are also having to foot the enormous bill for it is pretty damn outrageous. Let those who voted him in have some responsibility for helping us out with those costs.

Presidents are elected, not their families. I don't like the way first spouses are given power that really shouldn't have, at all. Consistent with that is a recognition that families can't be told how to behave, how to live, by the President or by the voters. Don't like his family's choices. Tough. Vote against him in the next election. Til then, it is what it is. Melanie and Baron want to stay in NYC, that's their decision. They don't owe anyone anything in that regard, imo.
