I'm tired and undercaffeinated. I can't make heads or tails of the entire mess. New from the AP: Manafort had plan to benefit Putin governmentGranted, his business relationship with Russia took place years ago...but it's beyond troubling that Russia keeps coming up, over and over. I'll be interested to see what the investigations turn up.

I think Manafort's going down. The first of many, one hopes.

For the love of pete, why would any American, at any time, want to work to "greatly benefit" Putin?
Yeah, Manafort likely goes under the bus (where he belongs).

If they can burn him down, great. But people are acting like every little thing, every indication of possible Russian influence here or there is some sort of unprecedented event. You know what "model" worked well for Russian interests, as well? Pumping millions into the Clinton Foundation coffers, then eventually seeing Hillary Clinton--as Secretary of State--sign off on a deal that let Russia take control of Uranium One. Of course, there was no "collusion" there; even though there was plenty of smoke, there was no fire. But I don't need to single out Clinton in this regard. Russian interests--like American interests--try to manipulate people in power all around the world. This isn't a new thing. They'll do this legally and illegally as a matter of course. It's Life 101. The breathless reveals by the press in this regard are getting really old, really fast imo. The promise of a smoking gun--that of Trump and Putin having a secret meeting where they divide up the world between the two of them--is dangled constantly but it's just not there. Someone wake me when there finally is one.

I think Democrats who bang on about Russia are too naive by half. Vladimir Putin doesn't need a puppet in the White House. He doesn't need the USA for anything at all. But it would be good if the USA spent the next four years chasing every shadow and rumour to look for the smoking gun of SOMETHING.
If the USA does that, then it will paralyse the G20, UN, and most foreign policy of the country. There will be a vacuum, and US allies and enemies can draw the correct conclusions in a world where the US republic is busy fighting itself. Putin is fine with that. He doesn't need a pal in the White House, particularly a pal which Putin probably personally loathes anyway.
But of course, the Democrats have an interest too in running after the Russians. Then the people who were snubbed of the chance to choose the curtains of their White House office can hang on for another chance in 2020. If the story is that the "Russians stole the election", then they don't have to explain Hillary Clinton's candidacy.
