ETA: My issue resolved itself as mysteriously as it occurred. I leave my panic below for your entertainment.
I signed into my computer as I always do. (I have Windows 10, use a picture password, and am the only user, if it matters.)
But when I sign in (and yes, my password works), instead of getting my usual screen, I get a new one, wiped clean of all my settings and programs I've installed, and gaaaah! all of my documents, music, photos and files are GONE!
The thing is, it still says it's my account (my name, my picture), and me as administrator. So WHERE THE FUCK ARE MY FILES? WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED TO MY SCREEN?
I've tried (twice) shutting my computer down and restarting. No good.
The good news is that I have a carbonite subscription, which automatically backs up all my files. I assume that if worse comes to worse, I can restore all my files with tgat. But before I do that, I'm wondering:
(a) What the FUCK happened, (2) is there any shot my stuff is still there on my computer and for some reason I can't get at it? (III) What should I do? (iv) gaah!

so much for my writing day. I'm afraid to do anything with my computer. I'm logged in as administrator. My picture is staring back at me -- but all my files are gone. My virus prevention stuff is up and running.
I'm afraid to try loading the stuff from carbonite because I don't know what the hell is wrong.
I'm trying to research ideas for what to do from my tablet. It ain't easy. A lot of the stuff relates to earlier versions of window, doesn't sound reliable, or doesn't sound like my problem.
Once upon a time, I had a guest account on this PC, from which someone else could not see my files. But it disappeared when I updated to Windows 10 -- also, it used a different password.
Seriously, any thoughts would be welcome, or a link to a site with reliable help.

ok. this is weirder still some of my programs I installed ARE still there (maewarebytes, for example) -- but not all (itunes, for example) -- and none of my documents, pictures, etc.
This has seriously ruined my day. It may ruin more than that if I can't figure out what to do. Am running a full virus scan while I figure it out.
Fuck, this sucks. This really sucks.

ok. deep breath. I just went down to Cortana and searched for a draft of my novel -- and it is apparently there. Ditto on a recent poem. It's just that, like all my other documents, it does not show up in my document folder. I'm going to assume that my stuff is still there, and that it's just that some windows 10 update did something weird and hid it all from me. (I know I did nothing different logging on or off.)
I need a hot buttered rum, stat.

Aaaaaand...
after spending all day googling what the problem might possibly be, I turned the computer on and off for what had to be the tenth time, and for no discernible reason, my files were back in place, my programs are back, my bookmarks are back, my saved passwords are back, and my goddamn motherfucking wallpaper is back.
I still have no clue, at all, what the fuck happened. All I know is, I'm tossing my damn computer and getting a typewriter. A manual typewriter. Or possibly a rock and chisel.
ETA:
Ever since I got Windows 10, I've been having troubles I never had with Windows 7. Another recurring problem -- sometimes, after W10 installs an update, the sound won't work on my computer. It's happened twice now. I have to uninstall the update to get the sound working again. Just fiddling with the speakers and sound controls on the computer does nothing. (Google told me I'm definitely not the only person with that issue.)
Damn, what a waste of a day.

Clearly, it's possessed. I can help you fix it, but first you need to gather an axe, a can of kerosene, and a couple sticks of dynamite.

Naturally, I already have that stuff on hand. What's next?

Naturally, I already have that stuff on hand. What's next? The ATF shows up and we don't hear from you for a while.

I used to use that picture password, but I took it off. I didn't recognize me half the time, and it seemed to screw more things up.

All I know is, ever since I went to Windows 10, I've been having strange problems. And yeah, the picture password gives me a hassle sometimes, too. By the way, robeiae and everyone -- there's a chance I'm going to slip into the Black Hole of Doom workwise for the next week or so, depending on what happens with a client tomorrow. If so, I'm (probably) not dead, I don't hate (most of) you, and I will be back (assuming I don't die). Just didn't want you all to feel insulted or rejected. After all, you have Angie for that.
