I just had a poem accepted in a literary journal. They will even pay me (a pittance, of course, but that is not the point).
I'm freaking thrilled and no longer require sleep or food.
They like me. They really like me.

Thanks I cannot print the poem in a thread (the journal only accepts unpublished work, and the interwebz count), but I can PM it to those who are interested in reading it. I haven't accepted yet (am still in work hell, and only just got the news tonight). No idea when it will come out. I'm feeling encouraged. I submitted to a dozen literary journals a month ago -- it's the first time I ever submitted my poetry anywhere. So far I've received one form rejection, one "this poem won't fit in our current issue, but we'd be interested in seeing more of your work" rejection, and one acceptance. I'd braced myself for a few dozen rejections at least, so I'm particularly thrilled to get an acceptance in the first round.

Awesome. Soon you'll be able to quit that lawyering gig and take up poeting full time.

Awesome. Soon you'll be able to quit that lawyering gig and take up poeting full time. Ha! Yes, well, I rather doubt that. Still, it is some evidence that someone who isn't biased in my favor or just being kind thinks my poem has merit. Also, it is a non-legal publishing credit, which just might help me stand out in the slush pile when I submit work elsewhere. The payment is meaningless in terms of my bank account, but it pleases me nonetheless; it is evidence that the journal doesn't just print whatever it is sent and isn't a vanity publication. Most literary journals do not pay anything for poetry, even some that carry prestige. We poets do our thing for love.

Plaudits, shout-outs and big ups. There's nothing quite like seeing your name on something you wrote and somebody published it.
“Poetry is just the evidence of life. If your life is burning well, poetry is just the ash.”
― Leonard Cohen

I signed the contract today, so it's a done deal.
That being the case, I suppose I can send out another round of submissions of some other poems -- only this time I can mention I have a forthcoming publication. It is perhaps a small step, but it feels like a giant leap out of the slush pile.
