Because, if we follow the fractured, infantile logic here, then the following businesses must shut down immediately because of bullshit "cultural appropriation:" Pizza Hut, Domino's, Papa John's, Taco Bell, Del Taco, every Chinese food place not run by Chinese people, every Japanese place not run by Japanese people, every restaurant that sells Southern food that isn't run by a Southerner (I'm sure the Southerner would still have to be non-white, though), etc. etc. etc. I originally had Domino's and McDonald's in my quote (What does the city of Hamburg think of all the fuss?), but left it for someone who would say it better. I dunno... I'm not a fan of white folks with dreadlocks either, and I kinda think that if you get a tattoo, you should at least be able to speak the language it's written in. But I'm even less a fan of policing that stuff. I'm just a big fan of doing the right thing without being told.

Mod note: I deleted two posts because they were referencing an argument from another thread that HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS THREAD. Do I need to make a rule about that? What posts? What thread? What happened? Why doesn't anyone tell me these things?

I'm not a fan of dreads no matter who has them because they're disgusting; they're notoriously difficult to actually get clean and they start to stink and break off after too long if not properly maintained. However, I don't have a problem if white people wear them because they're not originally chiefly a black hairstyle. Dozens of cultures throughout history have had them, including the Ancient Greeks. The style didn't even make it over into the American mainstream until the Rastafarians, when people in Miami and the coastal south started borrowing them from Rastafarian culture. Which means that any black American who isn't Rastafarian who has dreads is guilty of...gasp!...cultural appropriation.

I think it's interesting that somewhere along the way, white Americans seem to have lost any sort of culture, apart from buying overpriced coffee, watching soap operas, and playing golf.

Will hunt around for a link.

It occurs to me that maybe Wall Street and the stock market are reflective of white culture. If white women owning restaurants that specialize in ethnic foods needs to be stamped out, maybe non-white people working on Wall Street or owning stocks and bonds are also things that need to be ended.

And being chased through backyards by the POlice while their jeans fall down, to the Bad Boys theme. Let's not forget the white trash culture.

I think it sucks when people "borrow" and then distort, mock or put down a minority culture.
It's particular egregious if it is something of religious or other deep significance to the culture.
But I also think people get a little ridiculous about little blond girls in box braids and white people selling tacos.
Cultures have always borrowed from one another since ancient times -- art, music, food, fashion. I doubt there is a culture in the world that hasn't.
This, to me, is an issue where it matters greatly what is being "borrowed" and how.
That's all I've got.

Also, that's how cultures develop. You get exposed to something new, adapt it, make it your own. Kinda like the Borg, but not as intrusive.
Taking something and passing it off as your own is wrong, but being influenced, inspired, and wanting to emulate it, that's different.

Will hunt around for a link. I didn't say they were hard to "wash." I said they were "notoriously difficult to actually get clean." I was referring to the hassle of caring for them. I'm not going on personal knowledge, obvi. I'm only going off of what I've been told by people who have dreads. When you first get them, you can't wash them often for the first few weeks (I think something like only twice a week) and then when you do, it's sometimes tough to get all the soap residue out. Two of my best friends have dreads (well, one did but he recently shaved them off because he was tired of the hassle and they were starting to break. The other has thinner dreads and says they're easier to take care of than the thicker ones my other friend had), and they've complained about the problems associated with caring for them, so I'm only going off of what they've told me. They would likely disagree with whatever article you read. But, none of that has to do with the main point of my post, which was that complaining that anyone who isn't black who has dreads is "culturally appropriating" is a load of horse shit.

Yeah, I occasionally catch myself judging people for things like tattoo choice or ear grommets or straightened hair, or collagen lips... but I'm also instantly reminded that none of these things have anything to do with me: if you want to do it, and it harms no one else, then have a ball. It's fun to see people doing things they like, and thank goodness we aren't all the same.

I'm guilty of it too. Like seeing some kid as white as white bread try and gangsta up and be all rap like. People often can attach their identities to some image they think is cool, something they see as being bigger then themselves. I've done that at times growing up, and I'm sure people judged me. Hell I know they judged me, as my choices never made me cool, and I caught hell for it.
How was I to know walking around, saying live long and prosper, and wearing a Star Trek combadge wasn't going to have the girls throwing themselves at my feet? I mean, Kirk got all those green girls, why not me?
Of course, there weren't any green girls at my high school.
