So, I'm up until the wee hours, as I often am, and I stumble across this breaking story on Twitter. Active shooter (possibly multiple shooters) around the Mandalay Bay casino in Vegas. There are a couple of videos from witnesses - and it definitely sounds like fully automatic fire. One suspect confirmed down as of the writing of this post - but I don't know if that means there was only one shooter. In one of the videos, it sounds like at least two weapons being fired.
At least two people dead and at least 24 wounded.
When is this bullshit going to stop???

Update: Watching the police press conference now. They believe it's 20+ dead and 100+ injured - and they're very firm that it's just one suspect, and that he's down. They are looking for a female companion, though.

This is looking like the biggest mass shooting in US history.
Awful.

From the time I woke up at 5:50 am and looked down at my phone/alarm clock, the report was 25 dead and 100 wounded. By the time I got into my car at 6:30 am, it had soared to 50 dead and over 200 wounded. This would be the worst mass shooting since Orlando where 49 were killed.America is a violent country full of guns, full of hate, and full of dead bodies everywhere. We are painting our country in the blood of innocents.

My sister, her three daughters, and all their kids live in Vegas. Haven't heard from them yet. They usually avoid the Strip (like most Vegas residents), but I'm afraid they might know someone who was there.

Christ, this is awful. My parents (now just my mom) have always gone to Vegas twice a year and have close friends there. I need to check in.
I just can't understand how someone can walk into a room full of innocent strangers and gun them down.

There's still no word on his motivation, from what I can see.
Apparently it was a country music festival he fired on, so at the risk of stereotyping, I'm going to guess he wasn't a white supremacist or anti-gay bigot (or at least, that wasn't his motivation for choosing this venue). Country music fans lean white, and if anything, more conservative than liberal, I think.
He's apparently a 64-year old retired white American guy, so I'd say pretty unlikely he was recruited by ISIS. Or for that matter, Antifa.
His family apparently is shocked, didn't have a clue anything was wrong, and don't know his motivations.

The state department has said there is no evidence for that.
Also, fyi, there apparently have been a rash of troll activity to put out some divisive fake news about the motivations -- blaming it everything from white supremacy to angry liberal to ISIS -- just to get us all pointing fingers and angry at each other. And ISIS loooovves to claim credit for things -- they get to spread their terror without lifting a finger. This guy has the most unlikely background ever for an ISIS recruit, gotta say.
We should all be very careful and skeptical of what we read on this guy's motives until solid news from reliable sources comes out. I can't help but wonder, but I'm not believing anything until it's solid.

He had a lot of guns, apparently. And he seems to have preferred living in certain semi-rural locations. It's tough not to make some assumptions there. Imo, a link to ISIS seems like one of the least likely scenarios.

Death toll is up to 58, with 515 wounded. I'm guessing the former is going to keep going up and that the latter reflects some injuries from the chaos that had ensued.

Even if ISIS says something, it doesn't have to be true. So even if they claimed responsibility, they're probably lying. Just like I suspect they've lied about being responsible for half the attacks here in Europe. They're just vicious opportunists who know that if they're in the mix, they'll get half the headlines about the attack.
That said, hope everyone gets in touch with friends, relatives, or close ones in Las Vegas. Awful thing to read about, this.

The FBI says no link between shooter and international terror groups:
