It's easy to mock disco, and thus easy to mock the Bee Gees (and even easier to mock Andy Gibb). But you know, I actually think the Bee Gees are horribly underappreciated, to this day, despite all of the accolades they have received, which also seemed to be given to them begrudgingly.
What spawned this post? Well, this weekend I took my son to a record (vinyl) store in Miami called Yesterday and Today Records. He's hooked on old vinyls and is constantly looking to expand his small collection. Anyway, we were there going through all of these old albums with several other guys who were my age (or thereabouts). As we all looked, we all talked (my son knows his shit; pretty soon the other guys there were asking for his opinion on which album was a given group's best).
Anyway, there was an old Bee Gees album that was on the top of a stack of albums that had just come in and when someone noticed it and said something about it, there were a number of gratuitous jokes made at the Bee Gees' expense. But I piped in with a "you know, I actually like the Bee Gees; their songwriting and invention is right there with the best of all times." And that prompted a drawn out discussion on them with everyone eventually admitting that they actually like the Bee Gees, as well. Most said they preferred the old stuff, but still allowed that despite the disco aspect, the latter stuff was great, as well.
My fav from the old stuff:
And from the new stuff, the song they wrote for Elliman:
