I don't recall my school having a dress code at all -- if there was one, I don't remember anyone ever getting busted under it. I was always a pretty demure dresser myself, but some of the girls wore short skirts and such. I just don't recall the handwringing.
My schools didn't have dress codes, either. We operated on the far superior system of "don't do anything to piss off the principal or he'll drag you into the office, call your parents, and you'll regret it."
Now, my daughter had a dress code in high school and it was a tad puritanical (this was just a few years back; I think it's unchanged). She never had a problem though, except on a field trip to Disney World when it was close to 90 degrees outside and the teacher along for the ride singled here and a couple of other girls out for having too short shorts...
Sometimes, it's like sense has taken a holiday from school admins and teachers.
Of course, to be fair, that's true of a shit ton of parents these days as well, who do in fact allow their kids to dress wildly inappropriately for school (there is a line, after all) and who have no respect for the school admins and teachers and constantly undermine whit little authority the school admins and teachers have, which is part of the "why" behind the turn to police by school authorities.
Having said all of that, my son--now a senior in high school--dresses however he wants to dress for school, as does every other student at his school. There really are no lines and guys have shown up in mini-skirts, girls in outfits that would make strippers blush (well okay, not quite that bad). But then, he's at a small arts magnet school where every kid on school knows every other kid and they've all got each other's back. Plus the admin and teachers are not always in agreement, thus creating a tension that serves everyone well. Really, the parents are out of the equation, for the most part. It's a beautiful thing, but not replicable on a large scale.
