Who in hell thought this was a good idea? It’s a whopper of a bad one. Pun intended. It would appear that we live in the Age of "Have a good idea, then do the opposite".

I've missed being here - I just haven't put in the work to comment with any depth... and you all do it so well.
I keep reading and thinking, "Oh, he's right there..." , then reading the rebuttal and thinking, "Oh, she's right there..." and so on.
But yeah, meanwhile, we're breaking children's (and parents') hearts, and it doesn't matter to them whose fault the stupid laws are, or who's using them as a shield. If adults - nay, leaders of the free world - can't won't manage to stop doing it, while addressing the laws they say are the problem in the first place, then they really aren't as great as all that, are they?
Then again, here in Australia, we've been incarcerating asylum-seekers for a decade now, and holding them essentially in offshore prisons (government-contracted facilities in places like Nauru) to await "processing". They're hunger-striking, getting beaten and raped by guards, committing suicide, and languishing for five, even ten years waiting to be "processed". It's a horror, a disgrace, and a shame. Whether they're processed or turned away, they deserve to have some action taken.
And then there's the European refugee crisis.
So, cheer up, I guess. It's not just America that's destroying lives. The whole world is fucked. And hey, at least we haven't heard about a mass shooting in an American school in, what, several weeks?

I've skimmed the past few pages of this thread. I'm really heartened to see the depth, passion, rigour, and respect that you all are applying.
So, even if there aren't any happy endings yet, at least one lurker is uplifted by what you're doing.

Yeah, I've had a lot of time on my hands the last couple of weeks (riding motorcycle home, car with probationary license, hospital, yada yada), so these things find me. Still a few Bowie songs tug at the heartstrings, but this made me smile. If they come around locally, I'll go see them!

I...I like vegemite. Just a wee scrape. On lavishly buttered toast. With cheesy scrambled eggs. I am not a bot. With coffee this morning. Saved a slice for you, Cass.

It is also delish on a toasted bagel, with cheese melted over it. (pro tip: being chock full of Vitamin B, it's also very helpful on those mornings where one "hasn't had enough sleep")

heh... "movement"
My kids ponder: Imagine a country where people are crazy about guns, but also have cereal with marshmallows in it.
Equally, I ponder a country where people are crazy about Vegemite, but also have legalised wedding cakes with rainbows.
