BBC's coverageAnd that's all I have to say about Castro until I find out if we're only doing hagiographies here, or if we can go with truthfulness.

IMO, brutal communist dictators who kill thousands and keep their country in poverty for decades should get the obituaries they deserve. But I will wait and see what the higher ups tell us to do.

By "higher ups", do you mean us mod types? Pfft. This is a free speech zone as far as opinions go, c.e. Provided you don't call other members names or say trollish stuff that's aimed to inflame and offend without adding substance (e.g., bigoted remarks), as far as I'm concerned, you can express all the strong opinions you like. Sorry I haven't been posting much this last couple of days, everyone. Between catching up with friends, cooking, a bit of unexpected work, and some Christmas shopping, I haven't been at my computer much! I promise, I'll be back -- hopefully tonight.

"A brutal communist dictator who killed thousands and kept his country in poverty for decades." I agree. That's all the obituary he deserves. I may say more if I find a deserving hagiography to deconstruct.

I had no idea until I read an article in the Weekly Standard this morning, that part of Cuba's economy is selling the blood of citizens who think they are donating to save lives. Not to mention the history of forced blood extraction of prisoners in the 1960s. Horrible stuff. Yet it hits a pretty accurate metaphorical note. www.cubaarchive.org/files/Blood_Extraction.pdfcubaarchive.org/wordpress/

It's bizarre to me to see many of my friends on the left who are terrified of Trump are praising Castro, who has a pretty shitty record with regard to civil rights, e.g., with regard to LGBTQ people, and a pretty strong record of suppressing opposition and free speech.
More later -- I have shopping to do. (Damn, now I have at least three threads marked for some serious rants on my part.)

FWIW, people who take part in or personally order others to take part in the murder of innocent people just to consolidate power deserve to be remembered for what they did.

"Bad Hombre." Was that deliberate or subconscious? Deliberate. If I were female, you could call me a nasty woman.

I've had a bad case of the giggles since someone on FB pointed out the irony of Castro dying on Black Friday.

A serious look at the "wonders" of the Castro regime. Economic Deprivation Is Oppression Too: The Case of CubaAfter that brief survey of the worldwide successes of communism, the article zeros in on details about the Cuban economy, including this quote from Michel Kelly-Gagnon. Heckofajobthere, Fidel!
