It's tough not to see comparisons to the tea party movement right now, given that Dem incmubents and favorites are getting rolled by new, more progressive faces. The latest, from Massachusetts:

By and large, I'm pretty much uninterested in celebrity endorsements one way or the other, unless the celebrity somehow makes an ass of themselves in making them.
But I admit that this one caught me off guard -- Taylor Swift came out for Phil Bredesen and Jim Cooper (Democrats). Here statement at this tweet:
That one caught my attention for two reasons: (1) I'd always assumed she was probably a Republican -- and that's my bad, because it's largely, now that I think of it, because she's a country music star and it really was unfair of me to stereotype her based on that, and (2) what it says in the tweet below, which made me laugh for about five straight minutes:
So. Do we think Taylor's announcement will:
(a) be a boost to Dems among young women (b) send the kookier MAGA types out to buy and burn Taylor Swift albums (c) both (a) and (b) (d) other
(My own guess is (b).)

I'm also guessing (b). The right-wingers will give her the Dixie Chicks treatment, while I don't really think young people care much what their favorite celebrities think politically.

My guess is D. I don't imagine anyone will much care one way or another.

I admit I'm hoping for (b). I really enjoy the "destroy your own property to own the libs" "boycotts". So much more fun than the mere "well, then we won't buy your stuff" variety.

The Wisdom of Eazy-E...
Ice Cube: [watching a crowd destroy their records] Ain't that some shit? Speak a little truth and people lose their minds.
Eazy-E: See, the truth is, they can do whatever they want with them. I don't care. They bought them motherfuckers and we done been paid for them.

By the way, Kanye apparently abruptly pulled the plug on his Twitter and Instagram accounts.
Some are saying it's because he was getting shit for being a Trump supporter, which I suppose is possible. But, well, it's Kanye, and dude's been kind of whacked for quite a while now, IMO.

That's pretty much what Rick Wilson said when someone tweeted him a picture of his book burning. He said something like "buy a bunch and have a bonfire!"

The crowd of friends Swift runs around with tend to be on the left and, though she's not usually overt about her stances on political issues, many of her actions and statements on social media reflect a left-leaning perspective. Also, Nashville tends to be more blue than most people who aren't from TN might expect. Bredesen was a pretty good governor (2 terms) and I generally liked him during his term. TN is also a bit weird in that, historically, we flip-flop back and forth between red and blue with our governors: Lamar Alexander (R) - 2 terms Ned McWhorter (D) - 2 terms Don Sundquist (R) - 2 terms Phil Bredesen (D) - 2 terms Bill Haslam (R) - 2 terms (current governor) And there's also been a decent number of Democrat Senators and Congressmen over the past 30 years like Al Gore, Jim Sasser, Bart Gordon, Harold Ford, Jr., etc. Additionally, the current mayors of all 4 major TN cities (Nashville, Knoxville, Chattanooga, and Memphis) are all Democrats. But, for some reason, the state turns all stupid when it comes to voting in Presidential elections. Anyway, my point is that Nashville is a pretty blue town, despite the stereotypes/perceptions people outside the state have and Swift runs around with a primarily left-leaning crowd and seems supportive of left-leaning issues (e.g., gay rights, sexual assault, etc.), so rather than surprising me, this actually confirmed my suspicions about her. Unfortunately, recent polls show Blackburn pulling ahead of Bredesen by about 8 points (they were virtually tied about a week ago). That might be why she made the announcement, i.e. to see if it might give him a boost. I really hope he wins. But, he's said some dumb things (re: Kavanaugh) and, even though I suspect he did that mainly for political reasons (didn't want to scare off any Republicans who would've voted for him over Blackburn), I think his comments on Kavanaugh might wind up costing him enough of his Dem base to lose the election. He should've just kept his mouth shut and he might've won. Maybe the power of T-Swift will help him (the T-Swift bump?), but I doubt it.

My guess would be (a). Not because I live in Tennessee or know anything about the state, but I've visited Nashville and find it quite lovely. However, it would be presumptive to assume Taylor Swift has no juice when it comes to endorsements. The motto to the story is never underestimate the power of a pop star and when that pop star is Taylor Swift, you'd damn well better not underestimate The Swifties. It almost makes up for their mistresses' weirdly dead on arrival take on Earth, Wind & Fire's "September." Almost. The sheer Beckiness of that craptastic version cannot be unheard. Kanye West makes a strong case for a 72-hour involuntary mental health commitment. His metamorphosis into Black Tucker Carlson is nearly complete.

Well, here's hoping Swift really does help get some young people to vote. The Parkland kids are out there trying to drum them up, too.
Being a little geek who voted early and often, I honestly don't get what's up with the kids who don't vote--in particular, the ones who care enough about issues to march for them. Come on, kids -- you really could change everything. Marching is nice, but you've got to vote.
But then, I have a cousin who is pushing 60 who has never cast a vote. He's extremely pro-marijuana and anti-war, among other things. I told him he could vote for candidates who feel the same way about those issues, and that this was the only way to get the laws changed. He said "It shouldn't need a law change. That's just how things should be."
You can imagine how crazy it makes me. I've been having that same argument with him for literally years.
Anyway. I just don't know how you stir someone out of that kind of apathy. Hopefully Swift helps Make Voting Cool Again (MVCA...hmmmm.)

I'm all for more people voting. My problem with all the calls in this regard is that unless there's some major national issue, no one with a platform makes these sorts of calls at all. Young people should vote as soon as they can, sure, but they should be doing it at local and state levels--as should everyone else--first and foremost.
