Shocking. The atheist anarchist doesn't agree with the Pope.My point is that the "hey let's give ginormous tax breaks to the rich and corporations!" is not quite what the Pope or Jesus would endorse.
For a long time I've wondered why we don't have a "radical Christian right" that demands society, via government, feed the poor, heal the sick, visit the prisoners, shelter the homeless. Those were Jesus' words, the very acts God judges and by which determines those who enter heaven and who are cast into outer darkness.
I mean, Jesus was basically a socialist. It boggles the mind how he's been translated into a 21st century Republican.

Literally today, I was following a minivan that had two stickers on its back window:
On the left side: I'm a CHRISTIAN and I VOTE!
On the right side: TRUMP
Behind it: Me flailing
Obviously, my own actual religious beliefs lapsed a while ago. But I do like the Biblical Jesus and his values, as I understand them. And to me, those values would mean opening our arms to refugees and giving DACA folks an easy path to citizenship. They would mean that no one in a country as well off as ours would go without having basic needs (including healthcare) taken care of. And they would not permit a cruel, dishonest, greedy, grifting, power-mad braggart to milk the country for all it's worth, deporting veterans and separating families, calling names, issuing threats, building walls instead of bridges.
I'm 100% on board with Christ's values, as I understand them. But Donald Trump isn't.
The religious right are such a powerful group in the GOP that a Republican nominee needs them to win. Why they didn't use that power to push a decent man as the nominee mystifies me. And why so few of them fail even now to condemn even Trump's worst excesses...
I just do not get it. I don't see how you embrace the values endorsed by Christ and reconcile them with Trump. Pope Francis doesn't seem to get it either.
