Okay so I have a general comment to make, and I hope I'm not going to offend anyone buuuuut Why do people post threads like this? This one, and the one about the girl who defecates to hide drugs, and the one about the masturbator, and about the one a while back about the guy and the fire hydrant.... These people have serious issues. Drug problems, possible other mental issues. It's fucking sad. These people need help. Normal people don't do these things. It's not funny to me. Not to try to claim we should censor anything here, but is this... is this entertaining to people, and if so, WHY? These people are sick and in need of help, therapy, rehabilitation. Drug and alcohol addiction is no joke. I'm not trying to hate on anyone but why do people post these stories and then make jokes? And it's not anyone here that's prompted me to ask this. I realize it's totally a thing, everywhere. Before I got my AMAZEBALLS TECHNOLOGY-SWANK NEW CAR WITH BLUETOOTH AND PANDORA AND SERIOUSLY RADIO AND COMMERCIALS CAN PISS RIGHT OFF, all I had was the radio--the CD player was broken--so in the morning, when it was talk radio, there was this feature called "Wacked Out News," introduced by a jingle where one of the DJs sang "People hopped up on drugs and booze!" And it ended with "So. Many. People. On. Meth. Wow!" And I always had to turn it off, because I couldn't laugh at the stories. They always made me feel upset. They are actual people fucking up their lives, hurting themselves, and probably others who care about them or need them, and we're... we're going to laugh about how stupid they are? I mean, yeah, they are technically being really stupid, but... fucking hell. Because TRUMP! and by extension RUSSIA! Nice to have something interesting to read about once in a while

“Okay, that's fair. So you find it interesting? Discuss. “ “I have no problem with either the OP or Christine's objection to it; both are fair game under forum rules. But I admit to being especially interested in hearing Mikey pontificate on the topic. “ Pontificate eh? Well, lets see. First off I'm not a professional pontificator nor do I have any training or experience being a pontificist. And really, I have no interest in joining a Murder of pontificatori scavenging putrid flesh from the middle of the road. With that out of the way. I note that this happened in Australia I also note that there is no mention of the gentleman's emigration status, or his marital status. No mention if this guy has a dog, or children, or a wife or husband (legal or otherwise) for that matter. What dose this tell me? This story, with only relevant facts, was not written by American journalist.

Thank you for that interesting analysis of a minor article about the extremely bizarre doings of someone who almost certainly has either mental illness or substance abuse issues. (I both get why Opty was struck with it--I can't help imagining the whole thing--and why Christine was bothered by it. I'm weird that way.)
derail/
So Mikey. What do you consider important news? You obviously think an investigation into a hostile power's working to corrupt our election process, the possible cooperation of a sitting president and/or his campaign and transition team, and the certain (see, e.g., the guilty pleas) lawbreaking of at least some of the Trump team, is all a big yawn and a waste of your time. You often chime in to say so, and sneer at those of us who think that it's in fact a big deal.
What I don't see you doing is posting threads on what you think are the more important news stories, the ones getting neglected by the Fake Media. Feel free, any time.
If you're not up for that, you might also consider commenting on, e.g , the president paying off a porn star, the dozens of security clearance revocations in the White House, the tariff/trade war that experts overwhelmingly think will be horrible for our economy, etc.
So many choices! Start some threads on what you think is important and why.

Which reminds me! In all the rush of crazy events this last week or two, I forgot to get back to you on the famous Memo, which I gather you DO think is important! My apologies! I'll take care of that later today.

At this point I haven't seen any “news” articles in the last couple of years to really get passionate about, although the Bernie thing and trump thing was interesting on the political front. But not so much of a game changer for me. Our election process has been corrupt for years. I don't see a whole lot of difference between this cycle and previous cycles, so yes, big yawn, and only symptoms of whats wrong. And no, I don't give a tinkers damn about “pussies” or “porn stars” or “prostitution”. That shit is so far removed from my existence it's crazy. Oh I would love to have a hooker from time to time, but that shit cost a lot of money, money I don't have. How much dose that stuff cost? $100.00? - $1000.00? Just to get your dick sucked? A $100.00 will buy me 2 family sized pizzas and short case of soda-pop and a short case of coors light for me and a little gas in the car. Again no, I don't care about some people being able to piss away money like that. As far as what kind of stories I would find interesting and helpful? How about something along the lines of the DNC and RNC being broken up due to monopolistic behavior? Or maybe dismantle of the whole idea of “too big to fail”? Thanks Obama. I'm not holding my breath anticipating that some “news organization” will buck the system

Thank you Cass. I felt awful for soiling Opty's thread with talk of politics. I'm really sorry for doing that to your thread Opty

Thank you Cass. I felt awful for soiling Opty's thread with talk of politics. I'm really sorry for doing that to your thread Opty It was half my fault, too. Now that I've figured out how to move posts (heh, I only figured out how to do that the other day!), I'll probably move things more often when we go off on derails. I don't like to shut discussions down unless I think they're just spiraling into purely personal pissing matches (sometimes derails are as interesting or more interesting than the original threads, IMO), but I also don't want to derail threads from their intended purposes. Because I am the mod of mayhem, in that thread, I contributed both to Opty's original topic and to Christine's take on it (which I think is a legit commentary on the OP rather than a derail). People are free to go in either direction or both, as they choose.

This "place" is a messageboard in cyberspace that only exists--philosophically speaking--if people are posting threads and comments.
There's nothing wrong with the threads in question, nor is there anything wrong with questioning--or commenting on--the "why" behind them, nor is there anything wring with questioning or commenting on said questioning and commenting. And so on.
But I would note that some sort of "news of the weird" has been around since there's been news (and probably long before). One can always find reasons for aberrant behavior, but such reasons don't automatically excuse the behavior. Allowing that the people in the threads in question have issues and need help, what of the subjects in other threads? The shooter had Parkland certainly has issues, right? And one could say the same thing about Trump, to be fair. And while it may be the case that the shooter and Trump impact more lives than the subjects of these threads, such public actions necessarily do impact some lives.
So...carry on.

How about something along the lines of the DNC and RNC being broken up due to monopolistic behavior? Or maybe dismantle of the whole idea of “too big to fail”? Thanks Obama. I'm not holding my breath anticipating that some “news organization” will buck the system Okay. Mikey, what I understand you to be saying here is that you don't give a shit what dishonest and/or icky things Trump and his circle did. What you care about, and why you continue to support Trump is because you believe the two major parties, the DNC and RNC, are all-powerful and corrupt, and that this is resulting in people like you not being well off. Let's assume, for purposes of my response, that all of that is true. I'm at a loss to figure out how voting for Trump -- much less defending him no matter what -- fixes this problem. I submit it does exactly the opposite.
Trump is not some everyman who ran for a third party that will bust up your alleged monopoly. He is a billionaire who ran under the banner of one of your two heinous monopolies and co-opted its power for its own purposes. Moreover, not only is he not disassembling the alleged monopoly – he and his cronies are actually CEMENTING all of the power in one party and indeed, in one branch of government. They’re disintegrating any remaining checks we had to one party and/or one branch running amok with power. We increasingly have ONE GUY ruling everything via executive orders and essentially answering to nobody. The cabinet is full of know-nothing sycophants, Congress is sitting on its hands and whistling, and Trump is doing everything he can to demolish the free press and institute his own state press that will report only the “news” he likes. Maybe you like the current results Trump is implementing, I dunno. But consider that the other “monopoly” you don’t like will sooner or later gain power, and just might do things with it you don’t like. Many of us would strongly agree with you, to one degree or another, that the two party system has gone awry and needs some adjustment. E.g., Don would totally concur with you on the monopoly of the two major parties and the unfitness of any one person or entity having too much power with the One Ring. But his response is entirely consistent with his views – he supported a third party candidate who promised to reduce the size and power of the federal government and overreaching by the executive branch. If more people did that, we’d have more competing views and the two parties wouldn’t have such a monopoly. Hell, I’m on board with that, too. I don’t believe in supporting one party no matter what. I believe in supporting the best person running, and to holding him or her strictly accountable. I lean Democrat for a bunch of reasons, but I have voted for third party candidates and Republicans when I like them best. Here, I voted for Hillary (despite having plenty to pick on with her) partly because I thought she was the most experienced of the lot (and despite my many criticisms of her, I think the GOP take on her is freaking insane), and because Trump was IMO so awful he had to be stopped and she was the best shot at it. However, I openly criticized her, and had she won, I’d be screeching bloody murder every time she overstepped her authority or did something hinky. Unfortunately, Trump supporters are not doing that. They, like the GOP-controlled congress and the right-wing press, are giving him a total pass no matter how outrageously he oversteps his power, how much he lies, how ugly he acts, how chaotic he gets. I get tired as hell of people saying “but Hillary!” Yeah, I have problems with her, too, but FFS, there is not one area where you can criticize her where Trump isn’t a thousand times worse. Seriously. If you want to play the “but Hillary!” game, we can do it in another thread, and I’ll be glad to counter any accusation you have against her with why Trump is worse. Hell, I can totally understand why you might not want to vote for her. Fine. But why on earth vote for someone worse? And hello, he is not some righteous little guy with a third party that will take down the alleged two party monopoly. He’s a fucking billionaire with a blatantly obvious track record of corruption, grift, and lying, who is concentrating power with one side of the alleged monopoly, indeed in one branch, and stacking the deck in favor of billionaires and his own goddamn family!(aside -- It absolutely kills me that people ranted about the Clinton and Bush "royal families" and yet are all on board with Trump's blatant nepotism -- especially given how woefully unqualified his family members are for the positions he put them in.) How on earth does that help the alleged “two party monopoly”? How on earth does that combat corruption? It doesn’t do either – in fact, it does exactly the opposite. IMO, our very best defenses against corruption are (1) to defend the integrity of our voting system, (2) to defend our system of checks and balances to prevent any one branch or any one person from gaining too much control, (3) to defend our free press to ensure that the actions of the politicians we elect are known to all of us so that we can judge accordingly whether they are doing their jobs in an honest and upright way, and (4) to demand accountability of our politicians when they do not live up to their oath of office. And that's exactly what Trump is working to pull down. He doesn't care at all that Russia actively interfered in our election. He rules by executive order and does his level best to stomp on the power of Congress and the courts. He does everything he can to discredit the free press and talks repeatedly of muzzling it. And his supporters and the GOP are doing nothing to hold him accountable. This isn't how we get an honest system that answers to the voters. This is how we get dictatorships.

I'll add this --
(1) If you don't like what's happening in the two big parties, work to change it. Vote in all the elections, not just the presidential elections. Advocate for better candidates and better parties. It starts at the ground level -- too many people pay no attention to local elections and primaries.
(2) You think the news is Fake? Maybe some of it is. (Certainly some of it is, actually, because even with the very purest of intentions, mistakes will happen, sources will fail, etc.) Fine. But for pities sake, look at the news and under it -- is it supported and how? Are you applying the same degree of skepticism to Fox News as to the New York Times? Are you just assuming that because it is negative and relentless it is fake? (Consider for a moment how accurate coverage of Hitler or Stalin would have looked, for example.) Are you blindly trusting news because you like what it is saying and it is supporting your previous conceptions, and distrusting others because it doesn't? And consider the source -- isn't it just possibly conceivable that e.g., Russia Today is putting out the line Putin wants you to hear?
(3) consider whether some of your conceptions of people and policies you dislike or like have been shaped by things that are exaggerated, covered up, or are downright fibs. This is actually difficult to do, but we should all be doing it.
(4) consider whether your own actions and your own votes are actually the best you can do to further what you think is most important. Consider what effect your actions and inactions are having, and those of others taking those same actions or inactions.
This isn't just a homily to you, btw -- this is what we all, as citizens, should be doing. It's actually hard -- we all have some preconceptions and hobby horses we like to ride politically, and I'm no exceptions. But by and large, I don't think too many are even trying to do any of this -- they're lining up on teams and sticking to them right or wrong, come hell or high water, and it's a goddamn disaster.
Btw, I posted regarding the Nunes Memo, and tossed a ball back in your court, if you are interested in taking it up.

Not really, What I'm trying to say is that the Executive and the Legislative branches of government are icky and dishonest. The judicial arm, as far as I can see, are not quit so bad...yet. And no, most economic situations are a local thing in my view No I never implied that. New boss, just like the old boss Are you implying I'm not consistent in my political views? [/b]Are you aware Cass that my state, Oregon, voted for Bernie? The point being that you have this nasty habit of implying "you're ether with us, or you're with the terrorist". Gets kind of old The rest of this is just no We've been doing it your way for 200+ years. Look where we're at now. #notpretty

No. It's because you just dig in your heels and repeat the same unsupported stuff, or stuff supported only by partisan sources relying on unsupported stuff and anything you can't answer, you just say doesn't matter. It's pointless.
I argue with some others here until the moon and back again. Hardly a person here I haven't done that with. And actually, I don't always argue on one side. See, e.g., arguments that range for pages with Rob, nighttimer, Christine, etc. -- all of whom I also often agree with, depending on the issue. So, yeah, I'll stand on my record. You can stand on yours. I'm good with that.
