Also, doesn't seem to be enough cooperation between them. I think this is the real parenting problem here (taking aside that kid might also just be a bad seed, which sometimes happens). The parents loathe each other and don't respect each other. I'm sure the kid sees that -- I get the impression they all use one another as weapons against each other. The dad isn't a bad guy, as an individual, and he does care. When he's with the kid, he clearly tries to impose discipline. He made the kid apologize . Kid goes to church with him and passes cookie and punch to dad's choir friends. His manners around adults, superficially, are excellent. Etc. Clearly, there's been some successful training at some level. But I think the terrible relationship between the parents has certainly had a detrimental effect here. I think the kid has walked away with the lesson "play nice with the superficial stuff and to hell with the principles."
