A tribute from Tammy Duckworth: ETA: BTW, Tammy is another one I'm keeping my eye on as future presidential material. She's pretty awesome. ETA: Also, she has a totally awesome name. This country DESERVES a President Duckworth. I can see the add. It's Duckworth season.

I missed Cory Booker's tribute until now. Now I want to find out more about that first private meeting he mentions. And there's something adorable in Cory Booker remembering and digging up McCain's "welcome to the senate" tweet. (Think about it -- how often do we see, nowadays, that kind of warmth extended to newly elected Senators on the opposing side of the aisle? It would be great if that were the rule, but it isn't.)
(Cory Booker is another person in whom I see presidential potential, btw.)

oh, oh, I so love this!
I completely love the assortment of speakers/pallbearers at McCain's funeral.
To me, it says worlds about the final message he wanted to send America.

On McCain's regrets at not choosing Lieberman as a running mate (video interview with Lieberman at CNN link at tweet):
McCain also discussed this regret at length in his book, The Restless Wave. I have my Nook in front of me, so I'll give a quote:
He then goes on to discuss how some in his campaign eventually talked him into choosing Palin instead, saying Lieberman (who generally caucused with Democrats) would never get through the convention, Duh Base would reject him, etc. And eventually he gave in and picked Palin. He said:
The discussion is a few pages long, and I'm not gonna type all that. But, anyway, it's one of the regrets he carried with him about his campaign. I really wish he'd chosen Lieberman. If nothing else, it would have been really cool to see a bipartisan ticket.

The bottom line is Obama changed the campaign game. His rallies were more like rock concerts. McCain's campaign felt that in order to compete they needed their own game changer, and Lieberman as just another old, white, rich politician wasn't it.

I would have loved to have him and Lieberman on the ticket together. It probably wouldn't have decided the election, but it might have made it closer.
The fact was, the stars were aligned for Obama. People wanting a non GOP, the banking crisis, Iraq, his general charisma, and the fact that he would be historical was a huge tidal wave to over come. That's not even getting into specific issues.

oh, yes. The market crash in the fall of 2008 was a huge factor. And Obama had a lot of charisma.
I'm just saying, I really liked his reasoning in wanting to pick Lieberman. I liked that he wanted a bipartisan ticket. I wish he'd gone with his gut. Obama still would have won, I think. But it would have been great to have a bipartisan ticket. I doubt we'll ever see one now.

I love this, too. McCain's choice of speakers and pallbearers are spread across the two parties, but it seems that besides his close friends and family, he carefully chose them as his final message.
I read last night, btw, that McCain asked Obama to eulogize him back in April, and Obama immediately agreed. It was not a last minute deathbed thought. I love that.

This NPR interview with Ben Sasse about McCain is wonderful and quite amusing (and only a few minutes long):
Spoiler -- what he suggests doing to honor John McCain is ethical reform. He notes that both parties talk about ethics reform when they are out of power, but then walk away from it once in power. He said John would have loved it, it would put both parties on the spot and make them uncomfortable, which John also would have loved, and that it really needs to be done. Give it a listen.

Between 12,000 and 15,000 people waited in line for hours in 104 degree heat to pay their final respects to McCain in the Arizona State Capital Rotunda.
