So, today is a big day in DC, with the Kavanaugh stuff going down. And it will probably be the last hurrah for all that, I think. What comes out today will either cause the Repubs to say "wait a minute (highly unlikely)," or cause them to forge ahead, force a vote, and probably see Kavanaugh confirmed.
Imo, this stuff is going to have a big impact on the midterms. I think that if the Repubs succeed in getting Kavanaugh confirmed before the midterms, they'll suffer for it. And yet, they'll have another conservative in the Court.
In contrast, I think that if the Dems succeed in derailing the nomination, it will hurt them in the midterms. But then they'll have kept Kavanaugh off the Court.
Long game or short game, which is the smarter political play?

I don't think derailing the nomination will hurt the Democrats as badly as pushing him through will hurt the Republicans.

I think the only way this hurts the Republicans is if the Dems win both the House and Senate, and they then try to remove Kavanaugh. Otherwise, they've got themselves the swing vote in the USSC, which is just about all they care about. (And, given recent history, I don't think the Dems are organized or ruthless enough to manage that.)

I seriously doubt Democrats would try to remove Kavanaugh from the bench if he were seated.

At this point, I don't think what happens with the confirmation does much of anything to the midterms, other than create a greater edge for the blue wave. I'm in firm belief a lot of people are going to vote against incumbents, because they're fed up.
But then I've believed that before and be sorely wrong. *shrug*

I don't think derailing the nomination will hurt the Democrats as badly as pushing him through will hurt the Republicans. This. Especially as the Democrats cannot derail him unless some Republicans join them, which they will not do unless there is pretty solid reason. At this point, I think the people it would hurt Democrats with were never going to vote for a Democrat in a million years anyway.
