With November on the horizon, don't forget that many ballots will have things to vote on apart from political offices.
Here's a summary of what will be on the state-wide ballot in Florida (some areas will have local initiatives, as well): www.sun-sentinel.com/news/florida/fl-ne-voter-guide-state-amendments-20180830-story.html
My take on these:
Amendment 1--increasing the tax exemption for some homeowners--is a joke, but one that is likely to pass. It would benefit me, to be sure, but I'll vote no.
Amendment 2--that would make property tax assessment limits permanent--is okay, but I don't understand why it needs to be an amendment. I'll vote no.
Amendment 3--that would require voters to approve gambling expansion--is a clever delaying move being funded by Disney and the Seminole Tribe to protect their interests. I'll vote no.
Amendment 4--restoring the right to vote for felons who complete their sentence--is 100% okay with me and I'll vote yes, something I almost never do for amendments.
Amendment 5--require super-majorities to raise taxes--strikes me as kind of anti-democratic. While there are potential benefits here, there are also potential problems. Leave things as they are. I'll vote no.
Amendment 6--rights for victims of crimes coupled with increasing retirement age for judges--is an amendment that gets a no from me on principle, because it's lashing together two very different issues as a means of sneaking one in. But I also think the vicitms' rights stuff is stupid. So no, no, no.
Amendment 7--limiting university fee raises and giving benefits to first responder and military families--is another bs amendment that lashes two different things together. No.
Amendment 9--banning off-shore drilling and prohibiting vaping in indoor work spaces--is another bs amendment. WTF? Offshore drilling and vaping???
Amendment 10--a bunch of stuff, including mandating a bunch of new elected offices--is a series of items that the State commision is recomending. Again, they should be separate. No on principal.
Amendment 11--would clean up the constitution by removing obsolete stuff--is actually a good idea. The rare second yes.
Amendment 12--an attempt to curb lobbying by ex-officials--is perhaps an honest attempt to address a problem, but not the appropriate path. No.
Amendment 13--bringing an end to dog racing in Forida--is okay with me. The exceedingly rare triple! Yes.
FYI, there's no Amendment 8 because the Florida Supreme Court struck it from the ballot (and rightly so, imo).
What's on your ballot? How are you voting?
