I cannot imagine Beto had a prayer of winning. His desire to ban fracking is enough to sink him (not to mention bankrupt the state).

The polls are favoring Cruz by a fair amount currently. But I'm curious to see how Beto does tonight. Cruz is an expert debater, and this could potentially be painful. But we will see.

I'm sure Beto still give a good debate. But the bottom line is the oil and gas industry rule Texas. You won't get elected opposing them.

This is the thing. Winning a debate is in the eye of the viewer, especially these days.
E.g., I can't see how any sane human watched Hillary debate Trump in 2016 and walked away thinking Trump won anything beyond a "Biggest Asshole of the Year" award. But apparently, Republicans disagreed.
Beto is a tremendous speaker (way better than Cruz -- Beto has that great communicator gift that very few are blessed with), very bright and informed, and infinitely more likable than Cruz. But he's still a liberal debating in front of a deep red audience.
Cruz isn't winning because he's just so objectively more awesome. He's winning because he's a Republican in Texas. What's astonishing is that Beto is actually giving him a run for his money.

I won't be able to watch, girl #1 has a band concert I have (want) to attend, and boy has soccer practice. But I'm sure as hell voting for Beto.

And I'm going out tonight, but I will definitely catch the debate on the internet at the earliest opportunity.

So, having watched some (most) of the debate, I think it's fair to say that both scored some points. But it seems to me that Cruz more or less "won," if this is viewed for what it is: a debate in and about Texas. And I'm guessing most of the media recognizes this, since it's not gushing over Beto's performance. And really, I thought Beto was kinda slimy in some moments. I wasn't impressed at all.

Nationally, some people love Beto...but he has some shade in his past that would sink him on the national level. He isn't going to be a player at that level.

Wow, someone told Beto to come out swinging, perhaps because of his high single digit trailing of Cruz in the polls. I agree with Rob, though you'd think Cruz got demolished, looking at #TexasDebate on Twitter.
I felt a little sorry for Cruz when the moderator asked the men, "Tell us something you did outside of politics last year that would help us get to know you better. Mr. Cruz, you go first."
He looked like a deer in the headlights. And he then talked about how hard it is to be a dad and a senator, how he tried to coach is daughter's basketball team but had to miss a lot of her games, etc.
Then when Robert O'Rourke (heh) answered, he coasted off of Cruz' 'being a dad' theme and of course did better, due to having time to think. Twitter destroyed Cruz about that one, because O'Rourke talked about drumming/jamming in the basement with his kids and helping his daughter nurse a blind squirrel back to health.

Well, I for one was impressed. I was taken aback to see Beto come out slugging--that hasn't been his style so far at all if you've been following him, and I prefer his usual kindlier, less adversarial approach just because I'm hankering for that right now--but I thought he was effective. But it is, after all, Texas, and I predict Cruz will win.
And I COMPLETELY disagree that the "shade in his past" would kill him in a national election. Are you kidding me?! Please look at Donald Trump's past, or for that matter Bill Clinton's. It's small potatoes, comparatively speaking, and long ago. If voters like him, it wouldn't even be a blip.

I wasn't referring to his UTEP beef. But hey, believe what you want.
Beto will never make it to the national stage.

So. What are you referring to, and why is it you think it is more devastating than the piles of shit on say, Trump or Bill Clinton, that didn't seem to keep them from making it to the national stage?
And of course I'll continue to think what I want. If you give me a good reason to think Beto will never make it to the national stage, perhaps you'll convince me, but I don't see why I should meekly accept your assessment without a good reason; my own assessment (and that of many other people) is currently quite different.
