Thanks to rob, cass and others involved in creating a new home for discussing politics and current events. Much appreciated.

Thanks to Rob and Cass for the invite.
I hope we get a growing membership. I am happy to see folks here. I've been a member of other small, private forums before (as it happens, I just checked into one I had not visited in years), often ones that had been created by schisms from other forums. It's hard to sustain momentum and keep it dynamic. They tend to become very small circles, as initially a bunch of invitees will check it out, and then you'll have just a handful of people who want to hang around and talk to each other.

I hope that won't happen here. I think Rob and I both share the philosophy that we'd much rather argue with people than shut them down. That said, of course, those who cannot bear to see opinions they don't like may choose not to engage.

Seriously -- glad to see you here!

It's not so much that people get shut down, but even when you're open to new members, it's hard to avoid dwindling participation on a small message board, if it doesn't achieve a critical mass of members.

If we know people who would be good members here, should we invite them?

If we know people who would be good members here, should we invite them? I say yes. Rob can contradict me if he disagrees (but I doubt he does). I'd love to see a mix of liberals, conservatives, moderates, libertarians and iconoclasts engaging in lively debate. If they're not a troll solely interested in insulting people and creating trouble solely for the pure sake of creating trouble, I'd be happy to see them. For the record, I don't think anyone who has joined so far is a troll. I'm delighted to have a place to talk with you. All credit goes to robo, by the way. I only wistfully wished for a place to discuss things. He made it happen. Let's help!

Anyone and everyone is more than welcome. I've already advertised the forum on the ProBoards website, on my FB account, and on Twitter. Amadan is right about critical mass, I think. This place won't last if it doesn't get some members from other sources. Things held together at AW as a relatively small community because there was always new meat dipping their toes in and other stuff to draw people to the site. The road here is much, much harder.
And regarding where we all came from: I don't want snide/negative comments about AW or about people there. This place isn't in competition with it at all. There are no writing-themed rooms here. It's a place for political discussions (and laughs).
And please don't recruit new members while on the AW website, via pm or anything else. That's bad form.

I'm an independent centrist atheist. Some of my closest friends are born-again Christians.
Go figure, huh?
My pet peeves are social judgemental warriors who think screaming louder makes them right, Girl Scouts who don't understand -- "No, I don't want any goddamn cookies! Leave me alone!"-- is a final answer, and undead Chihuahuas. (I mean...really. What's up with them?)

It's a place for political discussions (and laughs). I agree with this policy wholeheartedly. I am hoping we get many of our AW P&CE regulars here of all political stripes -- including the people I bashed heads with on a regular basis. It's just more interesting that way. And needless to say, bashing AW and/or its members and moderators is not the way to do that! Not being a social media person, I'm somewhat limited in what I can do to recruit. I sent emails to those AWers I've established email contact with. And I'm considering reaching out to a few real life friends. That said, I'm going to give careful consideration before I do that -- I want to make sure those people will be good citizens here. Just because they can discuss politics with me over a glass of wine doesn't mean they're ready for, say, robo.

Wait, we can't make negative comments about haggis?
That's it, I'm leaving.

You can always veil them -- take a potshot at chihuahuas or the undead, for example. We'll know what you mean.
And of course, one can always bash cray, whether or not he decides to join us. Also acceptable is battery bashing, speedo slandering, coconut oil criticism, and the wholesale rejection of training schedules and despotic pieces of paper lying about on desks.
