Sherrod Brown has announced that he will not run for President in 2020, which is very likely the biggest political story since 2007, when Chuck Hagel announced that he would not run for President in 2008.

I'm sad about Sherrod Brown. He was one of the people I actually wanted to see in the primary race. I wish we could get Putin's pals Bernie and Tulsi Gabbard out of it, and put him in.
I don't mind a healthy horse race (at this early stage) between a bunch of plausible candidates -- especially ones who I feel confident will concede gracefully when the time comes and support the nominee. I think it's fairly normal at this early stage to have lots of people putting feelers out (though by the time we get to the debates, yeah, I'd like to see some cleared out). But Sherrod, I think, would have been a worthy contender.

My guess is that those of us who lean anywhere to the left and pay attention to politics know who he is; those who either lean right and/or aren't so into politics don't. I am betting Opty, NT, Mark, and Christine all know who he is, for example. Worth noting that Barack Obama was basically a "who?" for quite a while. I know Trump started his 2020 campaign in January 2017, but it's really still relatively early days. A lot can and will happen over the next year -- I suspect on both sides of the aisle and for third parties as well. I predict 2020 isn't a shoo-in for anyone. I'm actually still open as to who the Dem nominee should be -- there are people I'd be a lot less happy with than others, obviously, but there are several I could live with. (I'll be super unhappy if it's Bernie or Gabbard, though I'll still vote for them over Trump, just because I'd vote for a cockroach over Trump.) The most important thing to me is that Trump doesn't win, and that we get someone in who at least has some respect for norms, separation of powers, etc., and whose public utterances aren't something I don't want my nieces and nephews to see.

I knew about Obama from when he gave the reaction to one of Bush's speeches. I may have heard of this guy, but can't remember him for the life of me. Probably makes him sane. So of course he's not running.

You know who else is not running? Any Democrat who can beat Trump. Squandered opportunities ( shakes head )

So of course he's not running. My impression of him is that he is a good, smart, modest (for a politician), earnest man, an impression furthered by the fact he has decided not to run when he certainly has some backing on the Dem side. Of course, if he ran, someone might turn out some skeletons to shake that impression, but that's my current impression.

My U.S. Senator. Looks like an unmade bed and speaks with a voice like he has a mouthful of gravel. Good solid liberal. Glad he's not running. We need him in the Senate. In fact, the Democrats most pressing need are less presidential candidates and more senatorial candidates.
Two days ago another "who he?" Democratic senator announced he wasn't going to run for the presidency in 2020, and nobody noticed. But Jeff Merkley had a pretty good reason why.
That's probably true. For one of the two major political parties, that is.
You know who else is not running? Any Democrat who can beat Trump. Squandered opportunities ( shakes head ) You got a particular candidate in mind or just had a few one-liners lying around you weren't using?

If a Dem candidate who has the capability to beat Trump in a head to head in the places that matter throws their hat in the ring, I'll let you know. I promise.
Thanks for asking.

Thanks for asking. Anyone willing to beat Trump in the head has my vote.

NT, you're probably right that we don't want to lose Brown in the Senate for a presidential campaign. He's a good Senator, and we need good Senators now more than ever.
Haggis, if you've got an andiron handy, I'll try to earn your vote.

Brown's good and I've always found him to be rather sensible and level-headed...but he's never really struck me as "Presidential," though that's obviously a subjective, "gut feeling" kind of a term. So, while I like his policies, I don't really think he'd have a snowball's chance in hell. But, I honestly feel that way about nearly every current Dem candidate who's declared so far.
I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that Gavin Newsom's just biding his time and will throw his hat in as kind of an 11th hour candidate toward the end of this year.

Thanks for asking. I really wasn't. As far a Dem candidate who has the capability to beat Trump in a head-to-head in the places that matter throwing their hat in the ring, the last Dem candidate had the capability to beat Trump in a head-to-head in the places that matter. This moment of enlightenment has been a public service. You're welcome. Brown's good and I've always found him to be rather sensible and level-headed...but he's never really struck me as "Presidential," though that's obviously a subjective, "gut feeling" kind of a term. A California Liberal Democrat for President? Funny, I thought Kamala Harris had announced already? Meanwhile, you do have this to look forward to.
