I'm still gonna go see it. I'm not sure what the critics were expecting, but given how much the fawned all over Johnson's steaming turd of a sequel that was the Last Jedi (many of those reviews seemed to be ideologically-driven), while most people hated it, and half of the critics are crapping on this one whereas most of the audience seems to really like it, I'm not gonna put too much stock in reviewer opinions. I've read several reviewers who seemed miffed that JJ Abrams had somehow disrespected things Johnson had done in TLJ, and that frustration that Abrams didn't cinematically lionize narrative Johnson's buffoonery seems to underlie a lot of the mouth-frothing hot takes I've read. Given that Johnson basically did the same to what Abrams had done in TFA (i.e., crapped on it), and ineptly shit all over Luke as a character (which Hamill spoke out strongly against until it seems Disney told him to cool it), and wrote one of the most boring, suspension-of-disbelief-breaking SW stories of all time, if Abrams really did kind of take a dump on some of Johnson's awful decisions in TLJ, I'm all for it and that's even more motivation for me to go see it.

For months, we've known the new and probably last movie, would anger fans. We just didn't know why.

For me, the problem is Palpatine. I just became aware that he returns in this knew one and that sucks. It kills the entire Vader redemption cycle, imo.

On that point, I'll agree because it does feel very "diabolus ex machina." It makes me wonder if Abrams originally had Snoke planned out as the new Palpatine character until Johnson stupidly killed him off in his "I'm being totally transgressive and meta about Star Wars" TLJ shit-fest. Without that central Sith Lord character, the rise of the First Order makes little sense (because of the "rule of two"), so perhaps the only way to fix that was to re-insert Palpatine (given that Snoke was chopped in half...then again, SW: The Clone Wars brought back Darth Maul after he was chopped in half, so they could've done the same for Snoke). Granted, I still haven't seen the new one yet, so maybe there's a more plausible reason for his return (though, I seriously doubt it; I really do think it's because Johnson backed Abrams into a corner story-wise).

Its a recurring concept in many ofthe books (non-canon) that Palpatine is a master of cloning and has entire planets dedicated to creating and maintaining clones of himself in case he were ever defeated. So his return isn't particularly shocking.
White spoiler text below:
The worst revelation is they Rey is somehow his granddaughter, which makes zero sense.

Spoiler warnings would be nice given I've stated twice in this thread I haven't seen it yet.
