Personal Coronavirus update:
Friday night, my father suddenly lost vision in one eye. My mother called me and I picked him up and took him to an urgent care facility. Upon entering, with both had our temperatures taken, were asked to sterilize our hands, and of course were required to wear masks. I stayed with him in the waiting area, where social distancing was enforced. Eventually, he was seen and the doctor determined he was having an "eye emergency," with a possible retina detachment, so she sent us off to Bascom-Palmer, one of the (few?) great blessings in Miami, the top ophthalmology hospital in the world that also has a 24 hour emergency room.
At Badsom-Palmer, I was not allowed in; he checked in at security and went up to the emergency room on his own (mask and sterilize, again). All I could do was sit outside the institute and wait (in downtown Miami, from 11 to 3 in the morning). The doctor at Bascom-Palmer determined that he was actually having a mini-stroke in his eye (yes, that's a thing), so the sent him the UM Hospital emergency room. I followed him over (it was only couple of blocks away), but of course I wasn't allowed in. And this time, there was actually no waiting outside, either. So I went home. My only means of checking on him (he's 87, fyi) was by calling the emergency room.
He's since been moved to a regular room and is awaiting surgery to repair his carotid artery. I haven't seen him, but I was allowed to drop off a bag at the hospital's main entrance, with was then taken to him. He has a phone in his room, so my mother and I have talked to him, as have my kids. He's okay, all things considered.
I'm not complaining here, at all. I accept that the hospitals are doing things that they feel they need to do, to protect patients and staff. But man, it's all very weird, with respect to emergency rooms and hospitals.
