Woodward's "bombshell": nypost.com/2020/09/09/trump-told-woodward-he-downplayed-coronavirus-to-stop-panic/
The blue check mark crowd is beside itself with outrage on this. I thought it was pretty much understood--especially in that crowd--that Trump did exactly what he said he did in the interview. The only difference is that before, that crowd was certain Trump downplayed the threat because Trump was stupid and/or didn't care if people died. In Woodward's interview, Trump says he played it down to prevent panic. Don't get me wrong, I think one can still be pretty damn crtical of Trump's response in many different ways. I just don't see anything new here.
Don't forget, liberal stalwarts like Pelosi and De Blasio were "playing it down" in ways much worse than Trump in the beginning, by telling their constituents to go out to dinner, hit up Chinatown and the like, and don't worry at all about the virus.
So my takeaway here--beyond the "meh"--would be why did Woodward wait so long if this interview really does contain Big News (as many seem to think)?
President Trump publicly downplayed the severity of the coronavirus pandemic in an effort to prevent widespread panic from gripping the nation, he told Washington Post editor Bob Woodward for his upcoming book.
“To be honest with you, I wanted to always play it down,” Trump said in a March 19 interview, an audio clip of which was released Wednesday by the broadsheet. “I still like playing it down, because I don’t want to create a panic.”
The snippet was one of several published by the paper featuring highlights of the 18 on-the-record interviews Woodward conducted of Trump for his new book, “Rage.”
