I think there might've been another motivation behind closing schools despite the countervailing evidence: political one upsmanship.
From what I can tell, Dem leaders dismissed anyone who was against prolonged school closures as Republicans, despite the fact that this was an issue that crossed party lines. Once they convinced themselves that only Republicans were objecting, and they view Republicans as stupid, anti-science mouthbreathers (and every -ist and -phobe label they can think of), then they could view closures as a weapon to "pwn the Rethuglicans."
So, while school closures might've wrongly been viewed by some Dems as the correct course of action, it was probably also viewed as a great way to punish their political enemies for merely existing.

I think you're right, but I'm not surprised Chait didn't go there.

Oh, I didn't realize that was yesterday. I recall seeing a story about the recall a couple of days ago, where Collins and Moliga were smugly dismissing the recall efforts as "mostly funded by an out-of-state billionaire" and not representative of "what the people of San Francisco really want."
Um...right.
Guess they can't accept that they've royally f-ed up in their jobs and that pushing woke bullshit agendas rather than trying to actually help kids, parents, and school isn't what they're supposed to be doing in the roles.
Congrats to the voters of SF. Now if only they could get rid of the human shit in the streets, and the shit human in the DA's office (Chesa Boudin), the city might become livable again.

Oh, NOW I see why the recall elections succeeded:

Ugh, that excuse is so tired, lazy, and worn out. Anytime anything doesn't go how far-left loonies want it to, they always blame it on "something something white supremacy."
I suppose that's a good thing, in a way, because more and more people seem to be waking up to how stupid, non-sensical, and intellectually lazy that auto-reponse is and seem to be dismissing it with increasing frequency.
Maybe there is hope for humanity...if only a little.

That's not bad, gives some decent background. Compare it to this whine-fest at CNN: San Francisco school board recall sends a dangerous message"Oh noes, this is all a plot from some right wing cabal to reclaim the government via school boards!" Yeah, like San Fran is gonna replace the 3 ousted members with right wing extremists, lol.

Yeah, like San Fran is gonna replace the 3 ousted members with right wing extremists, lol. It's another example of how tired and stupid is the progressives' knee jerk reaction of "people don't agree with us, therefore something something racism, white supremacy, far-right incels." San Fran is overwhelmingly Democrat and majority POC and all three of these fools were still voted out with 70% majority votes. To say that this is the result of [insert "blame white people" and call everyone -ists of some sort here] is just absurd and completely disconnected from reality. The actual reality is that more people are "waking up" to how intellectually bankrupt woke ideology is, and how destructive it has become, and are finally starting to fight back (hopefully). As for CNN, it's currently crumbling and in a complete nosedive from all its current controversies and f-ups. Going hard in the ideologically-biased paint with that kind of stupid article looks like the last gasps of a drowning turd.
