That's the currently trending Twitter hashtag referencing this story: www.nytimes.com/2020/10/19/business/media/jeffrey-toobin-new-yorker-suspended.html
I read how this was reported in 4 different outlets and it's all pretty much exactly the same. None of them give any details about the nature of the incident, which seems a bit suspicious to me.
He claims he thought his camera was off and mic was muted. OK, fine. So, was it just a case of he didn't have any pants or underwear on and he got up from his chair and walked across the room? If so, mortifiying and embarassing for him, I'm sure. But suspending him for an accident? We all have genitals. If it was truly accidental and nothing salacious, then I would think a group of mature adults could all agree that it was accidental and likely humiliating for him and just move on without suspending him and turning it into a national story. There are plenty of students in virtual classes this year who've forgotten to turn their cameras off when taking their laptops into the bathroom when they're doing their business. None of them that I'm aware of were suspended from school, because these things are usually accidents and the students are already embarassed enough. No need to make it worse.
Or...was this not simply a case of accidental exposure? Did he intentionally show his junk? If so, I'd think those details would need to come out, so that people can avoid working with a perv in an online capacity. Or, did he whip it out and start jerking it or something? That would definitely be horrible and definite grounds for immediate job termination (if not filing charges).
This all just seems odd, especially given the nearly identical, cookie-cutter way it's being reported in every media story I've seen so far. Very vague on details of what exactly happened. Hard to determine if the situation and the response to it were appropriate/proportional for the incident. Also, without more detail, it will likely lead to wild speculating especially among people who don't like him and would want to smear him as some sort of secret perv.
This whole story is just so weird.
The New Yorker said Monday that it had suspended the staff writer Jeffrey Toobin and was investigating an incident in which he reportedly exposed himself during a Zoom call among employees of the magazine and WNYC radio.
“I made an embarrassingly stupid mistake, believing I was off-camera,” Mr. Toobin said in a statement to Vice, which reported the incident and the magazine’s investigation. “I apologize to my wife, family, friends and co-workers.”
“I believed I was not visible on Zoom,” Mr. Toobin said of the call, which Vice, citing unnamed sources, said took place last week. “I thought no one on the Zoom call could see me. I thought I had muted the Zoom video.” Mr. Toobin could not be immediately reached on Monday afternoon.
A spokeswoman for The New Yorker, where Mr. Toobin has worked for more than 25 years, said in a statement that Mr. Toobin “has been suspended while we investigate the matter.”
