If you look at all the stories and commentary on this, it's mostly as above: Scully made a false claim, was suspended, now is back. But such a narrative overlooks the fact that his claim about hacking was initially passed on to authorities by C-SPAN. This was true of Wiener and others who have made similar bullshit claims in pathetic attempts to cover for their own screw-ups. That's no small thing and--in my view--should be disqualifying in careers like Scully's and Wiener's. I'm very disappointed with C-SPAN.
C-SPAN is reinstating Washington Journal host and political editor Steve Scully, three months after he was suspended from the channel.
However, Scully will initially return in an off-air capacity. C-SPAN says that Scully will return to work this week, producing for its television programming and hosting Washington Today and The Weekly for C-SPAN Radio. "No date has been set for his return to C-SPAN's roster of on-air television hosts," the company said in a statement.
Scully was suspended from the company in October after he sent an errant tweet to former Trump communications director Anthony Scaramucci and falsely claimed that his account had been hacked after receiving blowback for that tweet. Scully had been slated to moderate the second presidential debate between Donald trump and Joe Biden. That debate was canceled after Trump's COVID-19 diagnosis.
"We view October's events as a singular episode in an otherwise successful 30- year C-SPAN career," C-SPAN said in a statement. "And while it was appropriate in October for Steve to be immediately relieved of his duties leading our 2020 election coverage, we reiterate our belief that now, having completed a three-month administrative leave, he can continue to contribute to CSPAN's mission."
