I'm torn on this, honestly.
Some thoughts:
1) Donald Trump deserves this. He really did cross a line by fomenting a protest AT the capitol building. It's one thing to wind people up in general, it's something else to do it and tell them to head over to the seat of our government.
2) I don't know that it was "insurrection," however. There was more violence in many of the BLM protests, some of it perpetrated against government persons and property, some of it "sanctioned" by various politicians at different levels. I don't see any of it as insurrection, at all.
3) It seems to me that congresscritters were legitimately afraid during this episode, and rightfully so. Things could have gone much worse (they also could have gone much easier, if the police had properly prepared). There's a lesson there that I'm afraid most of them will miss: ordinary people have felt similarly during many of the BLM protests that turned violent, but many Dem pols seem to think those people have to endure such fear because "social justice."
4) The move to force Pence to act was stupid, I think. Being a really bad President isn't grounds for a 25th Amendment removal, imo. But if it is, its totally up to Pence to initiate that. Pushing him to do it was a sure-fire way to keep him from doing it, imo.
5) There is the issue of gasoline on a fire: Trump is done in less than two weeks. He's actually being semi-recalcitrant, which is amazing for him, actually. Does pushing this impeachment provoke him and his idiot followers all over again?
6) All that said, if it goes through, it goes through. Trump brought this down on himself, that's for sure. And I suppose Melania has already been meeting with a divorce attorney. I'm looking forward to seeing Trump working as a greeter at the Palm Beach WalMart...
House Democrats introduced an article of impeachment on Monday morning and said they would move ahead regardless of tepid Republican support. While some Republicans have condemned the president for encouraging his supporters to march to the Capitol as lawmakers were voting to ratify President-elect Joe Biden’s victory, only a handful have backed removing him from office through impeachment or other means, while some have floated censure as an alternative.
Democrats, who have unsuccessfully pressed Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Mr. Trump from office, are expected to have enough votes to impeach in the House, which requires only a simple majority. A two-thirds supermajority in the Senate would then be required to convict Mr. Trump. The single article of impeachment alleges “incitement of insurrection.”
