Ridiculous. The only way it would make any sense is if that "curriculum" demanded something totally inappropriate from the students, like say spending a day in blackface to "see what it's like being black," or perhaps like requiring all non-black students to give all black students five dollars (hello, Portland).
But if it's just a typical black history month curriculum*, opting out isn't something that should be allowed, anymore than students in geometry should be allowed to opt out of shapes.
Imagine being one of the racist pos parents who asked for this. Their kid is going to get shamed by other students, I'll wager.
* Honestly, I don't like "history months," especially in schools. Teach the kids history properly, that should be enough. But given the reality of their existence, acknowledging in lesson plans is just no big deal.

I opted out of shapes and I still haven't recovered from that.

Yeah, if it's one of the bullshit "cRiTiCaL rAcE tHeOrY" curricula that just shits on whitey and claims we're all irredeemably racist from birth, then I could understand it. But if it's your run-of-the-mill, factually-based curriculum that's learning about the many contributions from black Americans and the historic adversity many have had to deal with and overcome, then it smacks of racism to pull your kids out of it. My first inclination is to think this is motivated by racist attitudes, but I'd need more info to be 100% sure.
