On Tuesday, German club Schalke 04 lost a game that meant they would be relegated out of the top tier of German football for the first time in 30 years. Shocking, really. Anyway, fans weren't happy:
That seems to be a tined-down version.

This is in uber-civilized Germany, fyi...
Police were present as fan groups and the Schalke squad met for a "short notice exchange," the club said in a statement released on Wednesday.
Gelsenkirchen police said in a statement, also released on Wednesday, that "500 to 600 people" waited for the team at the Veltins Arena. When the players left the team bus "eggs were thrown at them and they were verbally abused," the police added.

In an interview with Sport1, an anonymous Schalke 04 player has now opened up on the shocking confrontation with the fans, admitting he doesn't know how the team can finish the season after what happened.
"We were told loud and clear that we should be ashamed of ourselves and that all the players who won't be there next year should p*ss off. If that wouldn't happen, life would be made a real hell for us," said the player and added:
"We were attacked with eggs. After that, a firecracker went off, and the situation escalated completely. The fans came at us. At that point, we were just running. It was fear, pure fear! Some of us were hit by kicks and punches. I'm shocked, and I don't know how we're going to play the next few games."
