Just for some clarity, this is a list of his published research, and nearly all of it has fuck-all to do with the topic of the Vox article or the argument it was making: scholar.google.com/citations?user=ZN9V9b0AAAAJ&hl=enIt's hard to imagine them finding someone less qualified to speak on that specific topic.

His recommendation in the piece is that people look for other pets to replace dogs and cats. True, although the Vox piece is actually somewhat dismissive of that stance as being too extreme for a lot of people, right? If you like your dog, you can keep your dog, to paraphrase Obama. Well again, admittedly the Vox piece maybe should not have referred to him only as a geographer. But it's clear to me after looking him up that he's done work in environmental sciences. Maybe UCLA, as well? I mean, they hired him to teach in their Institute of the Environment and Sustainability. And the paper he published on food consumption by cats and dogs was a peer-reviewed paper. Is there some issue w/ the paper itself? If so, I think that would be totally fair, but I am just not sure I see a huge problem here. To be fair, I haven't read the entirety of Okin's paper, so maybe you're right that Okin's paper is the main source here. (Although even assuming that to be the case, I am still not sure if that means the Vox writers came across Okin's piece first before deciding to write a story around it.) FWIW, the Vox piece also lists 6 additional sources besides Okin's paper, including what appears to be a full-length book called Pets in America (which I also haven't read).

It's hard to imagine them finding someone less qualified to speak on that specific topic. I guess they could've asked me. I'm probably less qualified.

Oh. Well then you should be the university president, or at least a department head.

Actually, we could get various endangered species as pets: bengal tigers, black rhinos, blue whales, etc.

Nice try, but bengal tigers would qualify as cats.
