it was really, really good, I think. Florence Pugh was particularly strong, as was David Harbour.
The action sequences were outstanding, the plot was good (if not fully realized), and the dialogue was some of the best in a Marvel movie since...well, Winter Soldier.

Huh, pretty much the opposite of what I've heard, which is that the action scenes are ridiculous especially given she has no super powers, the ending is just an absurd, non-sensical CGI clusterfuck, and that a lot of the dialogue was too try-hard-to-be-funny and landed as lame. Also that the pacing and scenes are disjointed in a way that the slower, more character-driven scenes are really good and seem like they were actually done by the director, where all the 'splosions and belief-defying junk at the end seems like it was done by a completely different team, and some poor editor had to try to splice all this tonally inconsistent stuff into something coherent. Granted, a lot of my friends are snarky film snobs in the vein of Red Letter Media, so it's probably a biased sample.
Having said that, I'll probably watch it once it comes to Disney+ for free, rather than the laughable $30 they expect me to shell out for it if I want to watch it now. Not really interested in it because this movie should've come out before Endgame but, at the same time, I'll see almost anything with Scarlett Johansson in it, so I'm sure I'll get to it eventually.

I am of the belief that the best stand-alone movie in the MCU is--by a long shot--The Winter Soldier, largely due to the plot, the dialogue, and the directing (in particular, the pacing). IMO, Black Widow is the only other movie in the MCU to achieve a similar feel, though it's certainly not as good as The Winter Soldier. Meanwhile, Johansson is suing Disney (and rightfully so, imo) for fucking her over, leading to one of the dumbest responses ever from Disney, leading to pretty much total support for Johnasson: www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/business-news/sag-aftra-president-slams-disney-tactics-scarlett-johansson-lawsuit-1234994218/Fucking Disney...they have the gall to cite the pandemic, while they're openly using it to not only push their streaming service, but to also stick it to customers with the $29.99 Premier Access to see movies like Black Widow. Best possible outcome: Johansson is awarded all of Disney's ownership stake in the MCU movies.

I agree about Winter Soldier. It's probably my favorite MCU movie. However, they're starting to churn out duds (not that they haven't had any in the past) and I'm wondering how much longer they're gonna beat the horse of comic book movies past its time of death.
On a different note, I thought The Suicide Squad was pretty good, especially since I didn't have to pay extra to watch it. Unfortunately, it also being on HBO Max likely cut into its profits, so I wonder if anyone will be following suit with Johansson's...er...suit by suing WB for the HBO Max releases of movies originally intended for full theater releases. I read that Emma Stone was considering a suit against Disney as well for the same reason as Johansson.

My understanding is that renegotiations took place on the movies HBO Max is showing. Apparently, Johansson asked to renegotiate--following Disney's choice to release the film through its streaming service--but was essentially ignored by the company. Some say Eisner is fit to be tied over this, as well.

Big win for her but probably better for Disney moving forward. I seriously doubt they'll allow something like this to happen again and I imagine their talent contracts are gonna be a lot more stringent and contain a lot more clauses to protect them in the future. So, pay her $40 million, which is a drop in the bucket for Disney, and tighten the reigns for everyone else moving forward, likely saving them more money in the long run. That's just a guess on my part, though, because I hate large corporations and view them all as toxically self-interested and protectionary.
