Oh dear god, Friedman is utterly clueless:
That was from like a week ago. Can he read the tea leaves or what? Now he's joining in the chorus of "experts" who insist this all because Putin is nuts.

Reminds me of a friend of mine who used to work as a teacher in China. He once made a casual reference to the Chinese invasion of Tibet, which made one of his students react in horror. "Oh," the student said. "Do you mean the liberation of Tibet?"

It's disappointing and gross how world leaders are just letting this shit happen. Cowards wouldn't admit Ukraine into NATO because they knew invasion was guaranteed and they didn't want to have to get involved. Now, Russia's invading a sovereign country and lauching rockets into cities, and Friedman's Chess Grandmaster Joe Biden responds with...more sanctions. We've been levying sanctions on Russia for years and they've yielded no measurable effect. Did it prevent his moves on Crimea? No. Did sanctions dissuade his war against Ukraine? Not at all.
Putin doesn't give a f-ck about Western sanctions. Yet, here we are. I'm not a supporter of military aggression but for a small country to be destroyed and swallowed up by a big evil bully while the rest of the world just sits back and does absolutely nothing other than weak sanctions and tut-tutting Putin in "official statements" is some cowardly, inhuman bullshit.
"Sanctions" in response to all out war is the equivalent of watching someone straight up murder a person in front of you while you yell, "Hey! You better stop that right now or I'll dock your allowance, mister!"

Hans Blix JOE BIDEN: I'm sorry, but the U.N. NATO must be firm with you. Let me see your whole palace DO NOT INVADE, or else.
Kim Jong Il PUTIN: Or erse what?
Hans BlixBIDEN: Or else - we will be very, very angry with you... and we will write you a letter, telling you how angry we are.
Yep.

There are reports out there that some Russian troops are surrendering to Ukraine forces. Don't know if that's really true, but regardless there are still Russian troops like these guys:

Makes Optimus's analogy about watching someone get murdered seem pretty on point.

The political posturing on twitter is reaching new levels. I see all these American posseurs with a Ukraine flag in their profile imagining that they're doing something important by defending/attacking the other side (be it the Ds or the Rs) when it comes this debacle.

I see all these American posseurs with a Ukraine flag in their profile imagining that they're doing something important by defending/attacking the other side (be it the Ds or the Rs) when it comes this debacle. Our university's president sent out an "official statement" about it and said that if any of the students were upset, they have counselors available blah blah blah. That's right, apparently when there's a war in a country on the other side of the world (as horrific and tragic as that is), the real victims aren't the innocent Ukranian civilians getting bombed and shot at, it's the pampered, extremely privileged students at an elite university in the US, the overwhelming majority of whom aren't impacted by this war in the slightest, couldn't find Ukraine on a map if they tried, and didn't know the Ukranian flag colors until they copy/pasted it two days ago as their profile pic on social media. JFC there's so much narcissism and attention-whoring in the US it's sickening sometimes.

Have you guys seen the TV show Servant of the People? I watched the first two episodes on YouTube yesterday. It was actually pretty funny. Zelenskyy wrote and starred in this TV series, where he plays a history teacher who ends up being elected president of Ukraine. Of course, Zelenskyy later ended up being elected president in real life. (Also, in the TV series, he wins the election w/ 67 percent of the vote, which is not too far off from what actually happened in the 2019 election.) Check it out, if you have time.

Something I've noticed of late: most of the partisan crowd on social media want desperately to join a cult of personality. Trump nutters were publicly touching themselves whenever anyone said Lin Wood or Sidney Powell"\ (to say nothing of Trump, himself). Lefty Trump haters squeed with delight whenever Avenatti tweeted and peed themselves when they laid eyes on the Cuomos. And in all cases, there were hashtags to prove they were card carrying members of these cults.
The latest? Zelensky, President of Ukraine.
Hey, I hope Ukraine gives Russia what-for, and I'm behind Zelensky's efforts in this regard. But he's not the second coming. He just isn't/ Yet the twitterati are in full orgasm mode when his name is mentioned. It's ****ing embarrassing....

Because the people on Twitter who are the most active are bots, trolls, and bratty adolescents-in-adult-bodies (those with an "activist" mentality). The explanation for the behavior of the bots and trolls is easy; they act the way that they act by design. The immature activists, though, who can be found on the left and the right, are basically still stuck in a high school mentality where they're trying to be cool by associating themselves with whomever is the cool "it girl/boy" of the moment.
"I want to be seen as cool, and Zelensky is acting cool right now, so if I act like a Zelensky fanboy/girl then I'll be seen as cool too."
Their lives are devoid of meaning, so they try to fill that hole by clout chasing.
