For the record, I've never been stoned. Irony? I was framed, I tell ya! I was referring to your earlier post.

Back when Rob was a geeky little Hobbes-quoting child, he could only have dreamed of meeting a collection of people nerdier than himself.

I stand with Vince. I've never understood either spectator sports (particularly team fandom) or the gambling bug, so the whole scene seems like a ridiculous waste of time and effort to me. It seems like a lot of dick-measuring to no avail. I can't speak for anyone else, but I don't have a gambling bug at all. All of the links I provided were places where one could create a bracket for free. I honestly didn't even check to see what the prizes were. I don't much care. I still find it fun to make predictions and see how one does. Call me crazy. As to spectator sports (again, only speaking for myself), I enjoy the competition above all else. I may root for a team in this sport or that sport, but again it's just an aspect of me enjoying the competition: it adds a little something, for instance, to go to the pub where the Arsenal Supporters meet every weekend to watch the game. Again, crazy stuff. March Madness, however, has always been a special kind of thing, since it's college kids--most of whom have zero chance of playing professionally--giving their all in a knock-out tournament. It always produces emotional moments, moments that are not mine it is true, but that I nonetheless enjoy sharing. Not really any different than a great book or a great movie, imo. To each his own.

For all my joking about sportsball, I actually DO understand spectator sports. I run and cycle myself; athletic ability impresses me. The power behind a serve, a home run, or a great golf shot, the speed and endurance of runners and cyclists...it's impressive.
That said, I don't usually tend to get too worked up about who wins, with one notable exception: the Buffalo Bills. What can I say, I'm from the area and it comes with the territory. And I tend to enjoy underdogs -- this year's world series was fun for me for that reason. Also, occasionally I'll root against an athlete because he irritates me. Alex Rodriguez, for example, or Lance Armstrong. Both always seemed like arrogant ass-wipes to me, and I admit I got some shadenfreude out of their downfalls. On the flip side, I have irrational affection for some athetes -- notably, Phil Mickelson, whom I find adorable. (Actually, I cheer for him, too, so add him to the Bills.)
As for gambling, I am a non-gambler in a family full of gamblers. My parents loved Vegas (went twice a year) and the race-track. Me, I hate losing money and I really don't get much of a rush winning it. However, I enjoy watching the horses run around the track. Seriously, I do -- they are magnificent. And since I come from a family of gamblers, I intellectually understand why people like it -- I am just not among them.

Always with the negative waves, Moriarty. Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?* * watched Kelly's Heroes last night... That nut must be nuts...

And the Oregon Ducks squeaked by Rhode Island without Boucher, their 6'9" best shot blocker (Pac 12 best, actually) who tore his ACL last week. I don't know the whole bracket thing, but I want Oregon to win. Sweet Sixteen, baby!

This.
Especially the single elimination aspect.

If that's Serenity's Jayne, I have to say I have no interest in getting anywhere near his bunk.
