Another plebiscite in Venezuela: www.nbcnews.com/news/latino/venezuela-s-presidential-election-begins-maduro-leads-race-n840576 The election will be on April 30th. Most potential opposition candidates are in jail, forbidden to run, or not in the country. In fact, there is a group working with other South and Central American reps who were hoping to establish some rules to have a real election in Venezuela. Maduro's announced election pretty much puts an end to that effort, which I guess was his goal. Interestingly enough, Maduro is running on an anti-Trump platform, because as we all know, everything in Venezuela was hunky-dory prior to Trump becoming the US President...

It doesn't appear to be a functioning state now.

Shades of Smedley Butler. At least with offshore assets there's not a great chance that american kids will die to enforce this court order. OTOH, if Maduro does invade, I hope it's over by November. We're taking our first cruise to the ABC's then, and I'd hate to end up a hostage.

Bonaire is a salt flat in the middle of the ocean, Curacao smells like oil everywhere, but Aruba is okay.
(there's actually some good scuba diving off Bonaire)

Since I'm sure everyone is on the edges of their seats: www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-44187838Turnout was apparently no higher than 46% (some are questioning the official turnout numbers, saying it's more like 30%), which isn't really something we--in the USA--can mock, given our own numbers there. Still, turnout for the 2013 election there was near 80%, as it was in 2012 and in 2006.

Agree.
This catastrophe was not necessary. It could have been prevented. It's not like an earthquake or a mysterious new plague that no human force could stop. It's purely a product of massive corruption and mismanagement. And people are suffering, starving, and dying as a result. Such a goddamn travesty.

Rob, just wanted you to know I actively follow this thread and read your posts and links. Indeed, it's been one of my primary sources for keeping up on the situation (yeah, I know that's sad, but shit, it's hard to keep up with all the crazy news these days). I appreciate your maintaining it. I don't comment much, mostly because my comments would pretty much always amount to "holy fuck, that's horrifying." But I do appreciate it.
I'm specifically letting you know only because when I keep posting on a topic and relatively few comment, I sometimes feel like no one cares about it except me, and I'm just dumping info into a void. I wanted you to know that's definitely not true here.
It's just fucking godawful.
ETA:
I just can't begin to wrap my head around inflation of one million percent.

www.reuters.com/article/us-venezuela-economy/venezuela-to-remove-five-zeroes-from-ailing-currency-idUSKBN1KF36VIt's just so...stupid. So a 100,000 Bolivar note will be replaced with a 1 Bolivar note. And that will do what, exactly? And what will the cost be for all of these new notes and the exchange process? And how the hell can this be used to "tie" the Bolivar to the Petro? This fucker and all of his goons are gonna try to flee the country in the near future, I bet. I hope international agencies are monitoring all their personal accounts that are outside of Venezuela, proper.

It amazes me that there are still apologists for socialism and authoritarianism. Rob's link should be another definitive nail in the coffin for anybody who can add two and two. Yet people will still argue all day long for state control of the economy.
