After the story first broke, I heard some other stories about there not being any drone attack, at all. Instead, it was some sort of gas explosion in a nearby apartment. That seems to have gone away and it's mostly being called a drone attack, again.
Still...that was a quick arrest of six people. And the org who had claimed responsibility for the attack--The National Movement of Soldiers in T-shirts--almost bragged about the Venezuelan government thwarting the attack in its statement. I'm reminded of The Interpreter...

Who is coming up with this stuff? Seriously. If the Bolivar is pegged to the petro, then...well, I guess no one is entirely sure what will happen, but it's tough to see any consequence being anything less than disastrous, imo. Because this certainly means the petro no longer actually qualifies as a cryptocurrency (I have never thought it was one). And if the new Bolivar--the one created by lopping five zeros off of the old one--is pegged to the petro, then it seems to me that the petro is going to be subject to the same effects of hyperinflation as the Bolivar, meaning that in short order one petro will be almost worthless, which would disconnect it completely from Venezuelan oil supplies, since no one in going to except that something worth less than 1/1000 of a cent in the market is somehow equal to a barrel of oil.

I've had a theory for a while that civilization is on a downswing and people generally getting stupider and more corrupt.
The idiocracy, it is in full bloom, and it isn't funny.

So is anybody besides Sean Penn still surprised at what's gone down in Venezuela? Have those who put their faith in Maduro any recognition of why the implosion is so spectacular?? Perhaps Venezuela, like a long list of countries before it that suppressed human rights and destroyed their economies in the name of Economic Intelligent Design, is just another test of Faith arranged by God Marx, and if they keep believing, Nirvana is right around the corner.
How people can still support Economic Intelligent Design in this age is beyond my ken, particularly those who recognize the foolishness it represents in biology.
Give Maduro a gene-splicing kit. Perhaps he can Intelligently Design a new citizenry as successfully as he Intelligently Designed Venezuela's economy.
That's the next design issue we'll face with these tin-god cranks. Society best quit believing in these little tin gods before that issue has to be faced, or we'll see whole nations of little Maduro clones, willing to do the bidding of their makers.

Just because: www.local10.com/news/local/miami/salt-bae-chef-in-hot-water-after-serving-venezuelas-nicolas-maduroAs much as there is outrage at Maduro for this, there seems to be a lot more being directed as Salt Bae, which I think raises a now-common moral dilemma, yet again: namely, how much should it matter to Salt Bae--a chef--who he is serving? Here's Rubio on this (Salt Bae has a restaurant in Miami, for those unaware): Question: Is Rubio being fair? Is the "werido" comment out of line? Here's Danny Welbeck (EPL)celebrating a goal: Question: Can he keep doing that without getting roundly booed?

One thing I've always wondered about, in situations like Weimar Germany or Zimbabwe or Venezuela - why do they even bother printing money when the inflation reaches farcical levels? I mean, no one actually thinks a wheelbarrow full of paper is worth anything. I guess because it remains the only medium of exchange other than direct barter? But I'd assume when you get to that point, most people would only accept direct barter. Who's going to want a pile of paper they can't eat?

I just heard a BBC segment on NPR describing some of the conditions in Venezuela and it's simply horrifying. People have to purchase all of their supplies for the hospital before going into surgery. The morgue has no air conditioning (electricity is out everywhere), and bodies are actually exploding after lying in the hot morgue for days. One of the morgue workers said they do not even supply gloves for the workers to clean up the exploded bodies. I worked in a necropsy lab (autopsies for animals) the summer after high school. They would occasionally do a necropsy on a dog's bloated dead body. The smell was so putrid I can still remember it like it was yesterday. And to think this is happening with people. I just... When I tried to find a link to the radio program, I found this article from TWO YEARS ago on the same thing. These poor people. www.foxnews.com/world/graphic-corpses-rotting-exploding-in-venezuelan-morgues-autopsies-a-luxury-of-the-pastHere's a CNN article on the healthcare issues there. So tragic. And we have the luxury to spend time and energy worrying about Elizabeth Warren's DNA test.
