Tangent:
The story says "a round-the-world flight." I would say "an around-the-world flight." Which is correct? Are both?

Ahem. Sorry about that.
On Amelia -- we've been allies with Japan for an awfully long time. Wouldn't they maybe 'fess up before now? Or is that naive of me?

They may no longer know the truth in that regard. The records could actually be gone and the information may have never gone up the chain of command.

I must say, the picture does look like her. I know, some will scoff and say "it's her back!" But...
It's a cliche of my beloved mystery novels that a back is more recognizable than a face. And while that may be an exaggeration, there is some truth to it. At least, backs are more distinctive than many give credit to. When running in a race, for example, with mobs of people all in generic running clothes, hair hidden and face obscured under a baseball cap, I very often can pick my friends out by their backs. The way they are shaped, the way they hold themselves -- it's quite distinctive, if you pay attention to that sort of thing.
The way they move, of course, also factors into it, and we can't see that here.

I think the guy really looks like her navigator. The hairline really does seem unmistakable.

Yep. And hairlines are extremely distinctive as well.

I was always rather fond of the space alien theory.

Heh. It continually surprise me when people take the History/Discovery channel seriously about anything.
I'm sure they'll be back to showing documentaries about Erich von Däniken's theories Before long.
