I got all excited when I saw CGAdmin emerge from his hideous lair. I had high hopes of bannings, stonings, mass insurrection, and robo burned in effigy.
Instead I get a thread merge. Color me disappointed.

I never said we should ignore race, but see the individual person. Race is certainly a part of everyone's identity, but not the whole of it.
A white guy raised in NYC with parents who are lawyers and doctors in affluent circumstances in the best schools will have a different life experience than a white guy growing up in a trailer park, with a single mom, who doesn't know if they'll be food on the table week after week.
Race, gender, sexual orientation are parts of who we are, not the whole of it.

Race, gender, sexual orientation are parts of who we are, not the whole of it. I agree, with respect to a general point of view. But how one relates to this aspects of their existence is going to vary, based not only on individual circumstance, but also on the nature of a given aspect. In other words, rich white guy and poor white guy are certainly going to have different experiences, but so is poor black guy. And the latter is not going to see things the same way--as a matter of course--as poor white guy, with regard to the role of race on this different experiences. All of them not just the ones that outsiders see as obviously connected. I.e, ohio49er has a point. Then again, so do you.

Re: the ongoing discussion - I'm reading a book called Waking Up White, which might be of interest to some others here. It's essentially about privilege, and how you can be totally blind to yours without realizing it. I'm reading it as part of a book club on Facebook that arose out of a discussion on how bold white nationalists have become and how to counteract that worldview.

I wish your America were the reality, but it's really not. Race is not a part of everyone's identity because too many times my experience is White Americans do not view themselves in racial terms until it is juxtaposition to someone of a different race. That is not to say all of those interactions are negative. Of course they aren't as Whites and Blacks and Asians and Latinos and other races, creeds, colors, faiths and philosophies eat together, sleep together, work and play together and co-exist together. However, this election wasn't about any of that and in fact it was a rejection and turning away from that. America First, and all that, y'know? But that doesn't mean ALL Americans are included and some Americans are going to come in second, third and dead last. Happy Thanksgiving. And I sincerely mean that. Well, my view is how I think things should be, not how I think the world is. Having said that, Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours as well.
