The War on Drugs has never been about managing public health risks. It's been about managing people, specifically the opposition. Look no further than the Erlichman confession. If that didn't raise an outrage and get those thousands of political prisoners released, that tells you all you need to know about the political class' interest in justice or the health of the public.

They should at least decriminalize hallucinogens. There are some huge leaps that could be made in successfully treating/curing crippling mental illness with hallucinogens. Psilocybin and ketamine, to name just two, have worked wonders in clinical trials for people with clinical depression and PTSD.
