I agree he shouldn't have asked, but honestly the administration's pressure on Wray to fire McCabe was/is waaaaaaay more significant, IMO.

Sure, it's wildly inappropriate. Trump shouldn't do such things to any government employee, particularly to those who report to the executive branch. I'm not sure there's a fix, however, apart from the ballot box. That said, I'm amused with how so many stories on this note the stuff about McCabe's wife, then leave it alone as if it doesn't matter at all, ass if it isn't any sort of a problem. Because the I think all of these links between high level government employees, political office holders (and would-be office holders), and powerful figures in the media, not to mention a shit-ton of K Street lobbyists, is something that rubs a ton of people the wrong way, to say the least. Because I think some of the links in this regard are every bot as strong--if not stronger--than the links between Trump and Russia. I was watching the early morning talking heads on CNN today--Cuomo and Camerota--and Trump's browbeating of McCabe was indeed the topic. And they mentioned the McAuliffe-to-Jill-McCabe money link (and immediately dropped it). Interestingly enough, Jill McCabe's platform for her VA State Senate run was largely built on her not being a politician. But a half-million plus dollars from the-powers-that-be in VA is hardly business as usual, imo. Very obviously, McCabe was seen as a potential ally of the same, partly because of who her spouse is. Nothing illegal, nothing violating FBI rules (well, probably), but hardly as pure as the driven snow. I don't want to excuse Trump; what he did was wrong, and demonstrates yet again that he lacks the temperament and skill set for the office he holds. But his existence as President is--imo--helping to demonstrate just how much of house-cleaning our government agencies need. ETA: here's the spending for McCabe's election run for VA State Senate: www.vpap.org/candidates/257116-jill-mccabe/$70+ dollars per vote is pretty high for a state race, I think.

It matters, in that sure, we are all aware that all the DC power players are interconnected in often unhealthy ways. But short of imposing rules that say spouses of senior government officials cannot run for office, I am not sure what the remedy is. I don't think that is at all comparable to the President pretty nearly asking for personal fealty from the civil service.

I used to have a coworker who's wife worked for NY State. Every time there was an election, she'd wait and see who won, then if it was a change in the party, she'd change her party affiliation to that party. He told me, she was asked as the transition teams came in, 'You're republican or democrat, right?" And she'd nod and say yes.
