We're not at war. Economy isn't bombing. Is there any reason why the GOP is facing such a rough ride in mid terms besides the Clown in Chief?

I chalk it down 100% to Trump and Trumpism.
But I've been saying for a long time that it was a yuuuge mistake for the GOP to hand their party over to its lunatic yahoo contingency. Unfortunately for the country and the longer term interests of the GOP, only a small contingency of NeverTrump Republicans agreed.

Unfortunately for the country and the longer term interests of the GOP, only a small contingency of NeverTrump Republicans agreed. I don't know that the majority of GOPers decided to hand it over as much as they were stuck with him and it was either him or Clinton and they decided to gamble on Trump.
Some, to be clear, have sold their political soul to ride with Trump as he won, and will denounce him when it suits them. They are politicians. Some of the right wing or conservative commentators have done the same, where others like Bill Kristol have remain opposed to Trump.
But yeah, it's all Trump.

The voters decided that, yes -- but the GOP did not have to make him their nominee.
Sure, it would have pissed off the Trump base if they'd chosen someone else. Yes, the party might have lost that election if those voters had stayed home.
But the party would not have utterly sold its soul as it did. It would not have tainted all the other GOP politicians who fell in line. The GOP would not be facing the midterms they are facing, and a possible impeachment of their party's president. A whole generation of young people would not regard the GOP as synonymous with Trump. The damage to the country and the GOP from this, IMO, is yuuuge.
And you know, it's actually just possible Jeb, Kasich or Rubio would have beat Hillary. Even if they hadn't, with both houses controlled by Republicans, she would have faced gridlock every step, and the GOP likely would have won in 2020.
The GOP, IMO, paid one hell of a bigly long-term price to get Gorsuch rather than an excellent moderate like Garland.
Time will tell.
