www.sun-sentinel.com/local/broward/sunrise/fl-sb-bundt-cake-sunrise-city-manager-20180628-story.htmlOne commissioner is calling for his resignation. They're meeting on July 5th to decide on what to do. The hub-bub is that he didn't just ask the store--Nothing But Bundt Cakes--to honor the coupon, but that he threw a fit about it and demanded that they honor it. I think it's a relatively minor thing to cost someone their job, but...if he said anything like "do you know who I am," then he should get canned, as long as there's no outrageous buy-out clause in his contract. Thoughts?

I just don't understand what could motivate someone who makes $204K to worry about an expired $3.99 coupon for bundt cake. Of course he could be in debt way over his head, but it's bundt cake. If you can't afford it, don't eat it. So I suspect it's one of those power trips that city government people occasionally embarrass themselves with on the internet. Like that woman who was seen on video berating the cop for pulling over her daughter and friends. www.youtube.com/watch?v=yevjG5A_7Z4The "do you know who I am" is very seductive, apparently, for politicians.

After 22 years in the restaurant industry (my former life), this story is totally unsurprising to me. Lots of people are cheap asses and will try to scam the restaurant with false complaints (so they'll get free shit) and/or flip the feck out over dumb, piddly stuff like expired coupons. A lot of the time, this behavior comes from people who absolutely can afford it, so their freak outs over saving a dollar or two are truly baffling. There is also a small-but-significant portion of the population that treat service industry folks like dirt, and take out all of their stress/anger on those employees. It's like it's the only part of their day where they feel powerful. It's like they get shit on all day, so this is their chance to do it to someone else. There's a lot of overlap in the Venn Diagram of assholes and scammers. I think he absolutely deserves to be called out and shamed for his literally shameful behavior. Lose his job over it? Eh, only if he'd done like Rob said and tried to use his position as leverage. But, either way, if he does lose his job over it, the former restaurant worker/manager in me will still applaud and hope that this teaches him and other people not to be assholes in public.

My brother is a regional manager for Benihana and has been in the restaurant business since age 15 when he washed dishes. He's now 50. Sometimes the best part of family get-togethers is hearing him tell the latest stories about customers. There has been no shortage of jaws dropping to the floor with some of these - I mean there is some spectacularly unbelievable crap customers try to pull in restaurants. I waited tables the summer before I entered medical school and I was a TERRIBLE waitress. It was the most difficult and stressful job I ever had, and so your paragraph about the small portion of the population who treat service industry folks like dirt makes me really sad. And funny thing is my sister was the head waitress there while I worked and she always seemed calm and cool and together, while I was doing stuff like spilling soup on women in business suits. So now I always try to tip large, and not to complain, because God that summer was the WORST.

Ha, I also started out as a dishwasher (and busser) but at 17, and my last position was a regional manager too. Wait a sec....am I your brother? Whoa. I bet he and I probably have a lot of the same stories. Different restaurants, same crappy customers.

hahahahaha! Who knew we were siblings this whole time? Hilarious.
I bet you do have some of the same stories. The best are where he has to kick people out of the restaurant or call the police.

I am constantly amazed at the sheer stupidity of people who mistreat other people who have the opportunity to be alone with their food. I'm always extremely nice to anyone who has that kind of access.
Has nobody seen "The Help"?
I would have been a very vengeful waitperson.
ETA: As for the OP, if he pulled a power play, he should definitely be stripped of that power.

Well, he's not getting canned: www.sun-sentinel.com/local/broward/sunrise/fl-sb-bundt-cake-sunrise-manager-job-20180705-story.htmlSalamon declined to answer any questions from reporters, apparently. And no one has really laid out exactly what he said. And to be clear here, the complaint about Salamon was made by the owner of the store, so as much as I enjoy media-blaming, I don't see how this fits. People in the community have a right to know if city leaders--and city employees--might be abusing their power as a matter of course. Commissioner Neil Kerch needs to check his attitude, as well.

I don't think it was so much about the $3.99 as it was about someone (possibly perceived as being in a relatively menial position) telling him 'no.' If he did use the 'do you know who I am' routine, here's the perfect response. It's a S. African commercial but I think you may like it. link
