www.cbc.ca/news/world/jacksonville-florida-mass-shooting-1.4799655The fact that it seems you pretty much can't go anywhere without the threat of being shot to death is sickening. My heart goes out to the families. At the same time, I'm not sure I see a clear solution to this issue. The response is always "we need gun control," but that seems too vague and simplistic (because I rarely hear/read where anyone offers any specific gun control solutions other than "close loopholes"), and I'm not sure if it addresses the root causes of these tragedies (whatever the root causes may be. I have no idea). The other side of the response is "don't politicize this and take muh gunz!" which is just idiotic, in my opinion. Honestly, what's the answer here? Is there one? Are we just fucked and that's just how life is gonna be from now on?

oh, Jesus. I have some very close friends in Jacksonville. I'm calling them right now.
We need to close loopholes and give the laws we do have actual teeth. You shouldn't be able to just walk in and buy a gun, any kind of gun, without a background check to make sure you are a responsible, sane human being.
Other countries have managed this. We could too if there was the political will to do it. And as a matter of fact, I think most people, including a lot of gun owners, are on board with that. I don't quite see why the minority with the most extreme "Muh Guns!" take should govern here, but that's what seems to have been the case until now.
ETA:
My Jacksonvillle friends have checked in -- they are okay, but understandably very freaked out. The police are telling everyone to stay as far away from the area as possible because another suspect may still be at large.

And proof positive that the problem with violence in America isn't guns, it's video games.
(In case it's not clear, that was sarcasm.)

It seems the fatalities are limited to three: two innocent people and the gunman. There are at least eleven more victims, all of whom are currently in stable condition. The gunman, himself, was from Maryland, in town for a Madden tournie (a football video game). Unverified reports say he may have been disqualified from the tournament earlier in the day, or at least eliminated.

They narrow it further by saying the gunman was from Baltimore, Maryland. How is that important? Maryland actually has some of the tougher gun laws in the United States. And the shooter bought them Legally. While I agree we need to adjust laws to give them more teeth, I think we need to change something else too.
Not games, not movies, not music. We've had that for decades, but only now are our guns going out of control. No, we need to find a way to cut back stress and go back to dealing with things with fists (or heaven forbid knives.) Everyone keeps reaching for the permanent solution. Once the gun is out there's no reversing the results.

Apparently, David Katz, the miserable little turd who targeted and killed two of his competitors, was upset over losing in the Madden tournament. You end two lives and take your own because you lost a fucking video game. Well, I guess that's as good a reason as any in a country where any petty-ass beef is a good enough reason to pick up a gun and kill people. If only Katz had gone home and ate a bullet, nobody would even have noticed. And the hell of it is, the Madden football game has pretty much sucked for years now.

Nobody's interested in asking why the rise in senseless violence because those answers are hard. The problem is people deciding that violence is an acceptable response to losing a video game championship. Solve that problem. Figure out why some young people today find that reasonable, and solve that problem. But it won't be addressed because the answers would not be popular.

When you have a mandatory school system that is so boring a whole subset of the student population must be on "legal" drugs to attend, an FDA captured by the pharmaceutical companies, and a rising violence problem where those "legal" drugs often play a role, there's obviously only one solution.
Gun control.

Jesus Fucking Christ, Don. The mandatory school system is not responsible for making this kid crazy. He didn't turn into a schizophrenic killer because he was bored.
