I missed all the hoopla, dammit! I guess I was paying too much attention to the twitter activity of Trump, Ocasio-Cortez, and Ryan Reynolds...
Anyway, here's the story: www.usatoday.com/story/life/people/2018/12/06/oscars-host-kevin-hart-slammed-past-homophobic-comments/2232126002/
Apparently, the Academy told him to apologize or else. He refused to apologize up until the above.
More:
Hart also said this, in the time when he was refusing to apologize:
He's not wrong on the last, at all, imo. There's a serious culture of "gotcha trolls" who pretend that they're standing up for various groups, when their real goal is just to force someone's hand (because they get off on this).
Personally, I've been completely over award shows for a while now; I think they're stupid and not particularly entertaining. But I can see why the people putting them on want to avoid issues like this. 'Course, it seems to me that if one is going to select hosts from the Hollywoodland pool, one is going to have one problem or another, as a matter of course. Want a squeaky clean host with no baggage that's also funny? Good luck with that...
Thoughts?

Kevin Hart stepped down as Oscar host late Thursday following a crisis stemming from the comedian's refusal to apologize for his previous homophobic comments and tweets.
"I have made the choice to step down from hosting this year's Oscar's... this is because I do not want to be a distraction on a night that should be celebrated by so many amazing talented artists," Hart wrote on Twitter, before uttering words he had refused to say just hours before. "I sincerely apologize to the LGBTQ community for my insensitive words from my past."

The trouble actually started shortly after Hart triumphantly announced via Instagram Tuesday that he’d be hosting the 91st Academy Awards on Feb. 24.
Shortly thereafter, several Twitter users resurfaced past tweets from Hart where he tweeted words like "homo" and "gay." Per E! News, the since-deleted tweets date back to 2011.
An interview Hart gave to Rolling Stone in 2015 was also resurfaced. Hart had said: "Keep in mind, I'm not homophobic... Be happy. Do what you want to do. But me, as a heterosexual male, if I can prevent my son from being gay, I will.”

"We feed into the Internet trolls and we reward them, I'm not going to do it, man," said Hart. "I'm going to be me, and stand my ground."
