Jon Stewart justifiably rips Congress a new one for not even showing up to a hearing about renewing a bill to provide healthcare to 9/11 first responders. 'Never forget,' my ass.

I don't wonder Stewart got emotional here. It is completely disgusting that this isn't a priority and that anyone in Congress is balking at the cost, given the circumstances.
As a New Yorker who breathed that air from a distance, it's not at all hard to imagine that breathing it up close for an extended period of time created tremendous health problems. I can't even describe the smell of it, even from four miles uptown where my apartment was -- a bit like burning tires but way worse. I blocked all my air vents with damp towels and kept the windows closed for a couple of weeks, and still at night when the wind shifted, I could smell it inside my apartment. I had downtown friends staying with me -- their apartment was intact, but it wasn't deemed safe for them to go back for a couple of weeks. And right there at the site, it was actively burning, with toxic dust everywhere. Of course the responders have terrible health problems.
They stepped up and paid a price -- we need to step up and take care of them.

Absolutely. I can’t believe anyone has to even fight for this - it should be a no-brainer.

If you all watched HBO's Chernobyl (and you should, though animal lovers might consider fast forwarding through parts of episode 4), there's a disturbing resemblance here to how Soviet Russia dealt with its first responders.
