I usually find Bill Maher to be a smug asswipe, but he does good sometimes. This is good, imo:
Here's the media study he mentions in the bit: cpb-us-e1.wpmucdn.com/sites.dartmouth.edu/dist/4/2318/files/2021/03/Why-Is-All-Covid-News-Bad-News-3_22_21.pdf
Here's a NYT piece on the study: www.nytimes.com/2021/03/24/world/covid-coverage-by-the-us-national-media-is-an-outlier-a-study-finds.html
The NYT piece and the study itself muse that the reason might be that the media is giving people what they want. But why doesn't that reason hold sway everywhere else, then? The idea that it's because some media orgs--like the BBC--receive some government funding is utter crap, imo. The answer is simple: U.S. 'journalists" have largely become ideological/political agents. They "report" to serve an agenda. I would bet dollars to donuts that the negative reporting on FoxNews centers on "blue state" issues, while the negative reporting on the other major media outlets centers on "red state" issues.
Our media sucks.

About 87 percent of Covid coverage in national U.S. media last year was negative. The share was 51 percent in international media, 53 percent in U.S. regional media and 64 percent in scientific journals.
Notably, the coverage was negative in both U.S. media outlets with liberal audiences (like MSNBC) and those with conservative audiences (like Fox News).
