When I read about someone saying they set out to "make a statement" or "teach [someone] a lesson", I can be sure that posterity and education are on the opposite end of the spectrum. It's a cheap attempt to attach a vague, noble motive to doing something they know is heinous.

Even if this hadn't gone down the same time as the London attack, this story would have gotten run over by most of the press. The body count was too small, the victim was a nobody, and the motivation too common.
Sorry for the cynicism, but Black life goes cheap. The cops found a man and his girlfriend gunned down in their home at 2:30 in the morning. Who were they and why did they have to die? Only the killer knows, but most likely we won't. There's never a shortage of senseless and unprovoked acts of violent murder to steal our attention away.
It's not paranoia when they really are out to get you.

It's big news here in NYC, but then, it happened here. A racist murderer traveling to our city from another state specifically to target random black strangers in midtown -- we're pretty upset about it, I promise, and every local news outlet is covering it.
Since my news feed is obviously picking up that I live in NYC, and also, this would be the kind of story I'd click on, it probably ensures that I get every possible article on it. Most likely my news feed is not representative of the way this story is being covered elsewhere.
I'm genuinely curious for those of you who live elsewhere -- did you hear about this story, outside of my posting an article?

I shared it in my social media feed. Otherwise? No local coverage, though the radicalized student who crashed his car on the OSU campus and attacked students with a knife, did get referenced after the London copycat terrorist attack. But another dead Black guy? In NYC? How many does that make this week?

This keeps getting better...or worse, depending on your perspective. Newsflash: A Black man caught with a White woman used to be a crime punishable by death and worse than death. In the twisted little minds of sickos like James Jackson or Dylan Roof, it still is. Daring to stray out of your lane and forgetting your place can quite literally cost you your life. Get Out isn't just a movie. It's a terrifying reality.
