I've watched that show a few times. Helps when the movie was a cheesy one you liked. I always whished they'd have done one on KISS meets the Phantom of the Park. Great cinematic moment there. Peter Criss refused to show up to do looping, where you rerecord your lines because they weren't up to snuff, so his voice in the entire move was voiced by the same guy who did the voice for Plastic Man. The non KISS music sounded like it was a rejected sound track to a Scooby Doo porn movie. Ace Frehley kept leaving when he was bored, and so there are scenes where you could see someone else as a stand in, often his stunt double, who was African American. www.imdb.com/title/tt0077788/triviaThe band had no idea what the plot was. They showed up, yell out, "line" and someone would tell them what to say. To this day, Paul Stanley says he has no idea why the bad guy ended up in a sort of shock. None of them except Gene could act.

The cheesier the movie, the better the show worked. It also helped if you were up on the various clever pop culture, historical, etc., allusions the MST3K characters made during the movies. And of course if your sense of humor jibed with theirs. Among my favorites, the Gamera episodes. www.avclub.com/review/mst3k-vs-gamera-59531. Mainly for the reason mentioned in that review: I never watch a bad (or pretentious) movie without wishing I could see MST3K's take on it. ETA: I'd pay to see them take on "The Master", which I consider to be one of the most overrated, pretentious pieces of claptrap ever (with the exception of Phillip Seymour Hoffman's performance, which I enjoyed). I sat through that damn thing wishing heartily the entire time for some robot friends in place of my irritatingly pompous date. ETA (derailing my own thread, as usual): What made The Master so spectacularly annoying for me was that tons of critics and my date fell all over themselves lauding its genius -- though most of their explanations of why it was genius were IMO as empty and pretentious as the film itself. I wanted to kiss Rex Reed for giving a review that expressed what I felt: observer.com/2012/09/the-master-rex-reed-philip-seymour-hoffman-joaquin-phoenix-paul-thomas-anderson/ETA: And yes. Yes, I hated the movie so much I'm still bitching about it five years later.

I loved Gamera movies when I was a kid.

What MST3K did with the Gamera movies was quite affectionate. I got the feeling they probably liked the movies as well.
I still love cheesy monster movies with bad special effects. I'd watch 'em without the MST3K commentaries.
I mean, what's not to love about a giant, flying, jet-powered turtle?

Yeppers. That's the charm about the show. You're not hating on the movies. They just say the stuff your thinking out loud.

I am pleased to report that (once you get past a slightly lame first-episode intro) it holds up. They did a fine job with Reptilicus.
And yes, yes I DID stay home to watch it on a Friday night. Shut up.

MST3K needs to do Titanic. Badly.

OMG! How did I miss this? Netfix brought back some of the old classic episodes of MST3K! www.cnet.com/news/mystery-science-theater-3000-episodes-netflix-joel-hodgson-mike-nelson-crow-servo-gypsy/Squeeeeee! eta: oh! oh! "Manos: The Hands of Fate"! I forgot about that one! *cancels all weekend plans* Do you know what is truly sad? I do not have a single friend left living in NYC who would at all enjoy watching this with me. Nor, btw, do I have any who particularly enjoy discussing poetry. If you know anyone who appreciates both cheesy flicks and poetry, send him or her my way. If they also enjoy bickering about politics and enjoy traveling, I will consider marriage.

I also thought they did a great job with Reptilicus, and I like the new cast. It warms my geeky little heart that this show is back.

(Also also - I always wished they'd done Plan 9 from Outer Space, because I love that movie so much. I've never laughed so hard at unintentional comedy. They they finally did a Rifftrax of it, and now I can die happy.)

I knew you'd be a fan!
I still loathe you, of course.
I'm surprised they never did Plan 9. You'd think it would be a natural for them. Maybe the new cast will pick it up, if a new generation of geeksters takes to the show. And yeah, the new cast works. I'm also glad they stuck to the cheesy sets. it would be so, so wrong to "update" it with sleek sets and fancy effects.

It wouldn't be MST3K with sleek sets and fancy effects. The Rifftrax of Plan 9 has Mike Nelson, so it's just as good as an MST3K episode.

I'll have to check out the Rifftrax. Loved Mike Nelson (though I might miss Tom Servo and Crow).
